What will I Learn?

• Political Theory - You will study the key political concepts of power, authority and legitimacy

• Political Systems - You will study the constitutional arrangements in different political systems.

• Political Parties and Elections - You will compare the electoral impact of two different dominant ideas.
  
  

What skills with I develop?

• Researching, analysing, evaluating and synthesising information from a wide range of political sources.  

• Using a wide range of sources of information to draw detailed and balanced conclusions about political concepts and ideologies. 

• Comparing and contrasting different political systems, making generalisations, where appropriate, on the political process.  

• Interpreting and evaluating a wide range of electoral data.  

• Drawing on factual and conceptual knowledge of political theory, political systems, and political parties and elections.
  
  

What could be helpful?

• You should have achieved an A-C in National 5 History, Modern Studies or Geography and English.

• An A-C in Higher Modern Studies would be beneficial but is not essential.
  
  

Is there is an Exam?

• During the course you will have a number of progress checks throughout the year focussing on developing your ability to produce high quality 20 mark extended question answers; and source based data handling and analysis questions.

• The Higher course has a final SQA exam which consists of two papers. The exam accounts for 73% of your overall mark.

• You will also be required to produce an assignment which is completed under exam conditions in class. The assignment accounts for 27% of your overall mark.

What comes next?

• You can take Advanced Higher Modern Studies which will allow you to further develop your skill set.

• Further study of Politics or other Social Studies courses at either College or University.
