No. Your Reading, Writing, Listening and Talking skills are assessed in two main units:
Reading and Listening are assessed in the Understanding Language unit
Talking and Writing skills are assessed in the Using Language unit
You will also complete an assignment. You teacher will assess your work internally.

A pass in National 4 French can lead to National 5 French.

Paper 1 - Reading and Translation (1 hour 30 mins)
Paper 2 - Listening and Discursive Writing (1 hour 20 mins)
You also need to complete a Portfolio piece, a 1200 - 1500 word essay in English on a French text, which is sent to the SQA.
Your talking skills will be assessed by an external examiner.
What comes next?
Advanced Higher language studies could be a stepping stone to studying a language at university as a main or “outside” subject, or to use the language in the workplace. It is also good preparation for spending time in a country where the language is spoken.

There are many careers in which an additional language is a significant advantage, such as travel and tourism, international business, teaching or interpreting. Speaking several languages also enables you to communicate with international customers, clients, or business partners.
