The objective of middle school PE Ultimate Frisbee is to learn and practice fundamental frisbee skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Teams should consist of an equal number of players, typically 5 to 7 per side.
Rotate players to ensure everyone gets a chance to play different positions.
Use a rectangular playing field, often adapted from a soccer or football field, marked with end zones at each end.
Place cones at the corners of the end zones.
Games can be played in halves or for a specified amount of time, such as 20 to 30 minutes per game.
Starting Play: The game begins with a "pull," which is similar to a kickoff in football. One team throws the frisbee to the other team to start play. The receiving team becomes the offense.
Scoring: Points are scored when a player catches the frisbee in the opposing team's end zone. Each score is typically worth one point.
Throwing: Players must pass the frisbee to their teammates using throwing techniques such as forehand (flick) and backhand. Traveling (running while holding the frisbee) is not allowed.
Defending: Defenders guard players on the opposing team and try to prevent them from catching the frisbee.
Stall Count: When a defender guards the player with the frisbee, they start counting aloud (e.g., "Stalling one, stalling two"). The thrower has ten seconds to pass the frisbee to a teammate. If the stall count reaches ten, possession is turned over to the defense.
Change of Possession: If the frisbee is dropped, intercepted, or goes out of bounds, possession changes, and the opposing team becomes the offense.
Fouls: If a foul (contact between players) occurs, play stops briefly, and the frisbee is checked back into play by tapping it on the ground.
Traveling: Players must establish a pivot foot and may only move the other foot while passing the frisbee.
Out of Bounds: If the frisbee goes out of bounds or a player catches it with any part of their body out of bounds, possession goes to the opposing team.
End Zone: Scoring occurs when a player catches the frisbee with both feet inside the opposing team's end zone.
Possession Change: Possession changes after a score, turnover, interception, or if a stall count reaches ten.
Game Ending: Games can end after a specified number of points or when a set time limit is reached.
Safety: Emphasize safety and promote good sportsmanship throughout the game.
