Class Overview
6th Grade
In 6th grade, we will cover six units. Students begin with Light & Matter, discovering how light behaves and why we can sometimes see different things when looking at the same object. Next, we move into Thermal Energy to explain how heat transfers work. After that, Weather, Climate, and Water Cycling helps your student to understand storms and precipitation patterns. Toward the end of the school year, we will cover Plate Tectonics & Rock Cycling (how Earth's surface changes) and Natural Hazards (where hazards can occur and how communities can prepare). We wrap up the year with Cells & Systems to explore how cells and body systems work together to heal our bodies.
7th Grade
In 7th grade, we open the year with Chemical Reactions & Matter (how substances form) and Chemical Reactions & Energy (designing endothermic & exothermic reactions). Then, we shift to Metabolic Reactions where students will learn how the body breaks down food and what happens to it after. Next, Matter Cycling & Photosynthesis (how a plant's food production connects to the Carbon Cycle) and Ecosystem Dynamics (how changes in an ecosystem affect what lives there). Lastly, we will look at Earth's Resources & Human Impact where students will learn about community sustainability.
8th Grade
With 8th grade, we shift to Constant Forces (what happens in collisions) and Sound Waves (how sound causes motion) before exploring Forces at a Distance to explain how magnets can move another object without touching it. We switch over to Earth in Space where we will discuss patterns in the sky and space. Lastly, we will end the year with two units covering Genetics (inheriting genes and their variations) and Natural Selection & Common Ancestry (evolution and how species change over time).
About Me
Hello! My name is Halleigh Irwin, and I will be your child's 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science teacher! This is my first teaching at Midland. I am so excited to work with you and your student this year. I am originally from Ambridge, which is not too far from here! I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Middle Level Education from PennWest Edinboro. I am currently working on my master's degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Leadership from PennWest.
