Welcome to Paritutu class for 2026. Paritutu class is a classroom full of 25 wonderful year 7's & 8's. We look forward to sharing our year with you here.
At Midhirst School we live the KAHA values by alwasy showing:
K -Ka Eke Toku Pai / Our Best Always: Engaging in leadership roles, such as house leaders, and school councillors.
A -Auaha / Innovative Creative Learning: Using inquiry-based themes (the school’s Korowai) such as “Aotearoa / NZ Culture and History”, “Cause and Effect / Nature of Science”, and “Auahatanga / Creativity and Innovation”. These help students explore and use creative thinking.
H -Hauora / Well Being: Studying topics like pubertal change, personal hygiene, exercise, sleep and kindness to one another — showing focus on their holistic well-being.
A -Ako - Reciprocal Learning: Exploring community responsibilities, belonging, relationships and how they as learners contribute and learn from one another.
Structured Literacy
In Paritutu Room, we use a Structured Literacy approach across Reading, Writing, Handwriting, and Spelling.
By Years 7 & 8, most students are confident decoders, so our focus shifts to morphology—exploring word origins, base words, prefixes, and suffixes. We also work on the skills that make good readers great, such as identifying key words, summarising information, and understanding the author’s message.
Each week, students are given follow-up activities to support their ongoing learning. Thank you for supporting your child on their reading journey!
PR1ME Mathematics
Here at Midhirst School we use the PR1ME mathematics programme. This is a programme built on clear, well-structured progressions mapping out a pathway through Year 1 - 8 based on practices used by top performing countries in international studies. Our students receive a lot of explicit teaching and use Maths Buddy to help reinforce this knowledge.
We also supplement this learning with Rich tasks. These encourage and support students to think out of the box and view mathematics through a real world view.
