With increased globalization and mass production over the years, we've landed at a point today where it is harder to distinguish a distinct "style" for our time period. Social media has made trends incredibly accessible and fast-moving. There are micro-trends that last for a few months or less. People have categorized themselves into "aesthetics" like cottage-core, grunge, and clean-girl as a form of self-identification and community. A lot of people also draw inspiration from the past and enjoy dressing in vintage or thrifted clothing.
These fast trend cycles are perpetuating overconsumption by encouraging mass production of cheaply made clothes. When a trend fades, clothing overflows donation centers and landfills. Overconsumption is environmentally taxing both in production and disposal. It is interesting to see how we've come from homemade clothes, to department stores and mail-order catalogs, to malls and online shopping sites.
Overall, it seems that the 21st century has something that caters to every taste. As women's roles in the workplace became more normalized over the decades, a market formed around fashion for the "working woman." To add to this, there are a lot of unisex styles and fashion brands that cater to all genders, which somewhat reflects the progress our society has made with gender equality. This is the age of self-expression, where women can dress femininely, masculinely, or androgynously. Despite this, women are still under constant pressure from societal beauty standards about what they are wearing and how their body looks in it.
