Short Bio:
I came to Middlebury a long time ago, in the fall of 1995, soon after the belated completion of my PhD, written at Yale under the supervision of John Geanakoplos. I was born and raised in Montreal, and have a BA (First Honours) from McGill, and an MA from Queen's. I am currently the Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics at Middlebury and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland and the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics.
In 2017/18, I was appointed the Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the Hanken School of Economics, and in 2023/24, good fortune struck again, and I was selected the Fulbright-Aalto Distinguished Chair, both in Helsinki, Finland. I have also served as an scholar-ambassador for the Fulbright program.
At Middlebury, I teach a range of core and elective courses. As a researcher, I am interested in behavioral economics, political economy, public economics, labor economics, inequality and philanthropy, and often use experimentall methods. This work has been supported by a number of grants.
I am married to Carolyn Craven, a development economist and award-winning children's book author, and we share our old Vermont home with our cat, Professor Calculus, and, from time to time, our now adult twin daughters, Emma Laurel and Catriona Mari.
