The Middleboro Innovation Lab (MiLAB )is a new and exciting space that was built into the new high school in the 2020/21 school year. The innovation space offers some of the most up to date maker technology that hits on a variety of STEM standards. MiLAB possesses six 3D printers, a large format printer and vinyl cutter, laser cutter, 4x8 CNC machine, large laminator and a variety of woodworking and manufacturing tools. All these tools and equipment are in this space in order for students to be afforded the opportunity to learn their uses and be able to produce projects that are tied to the student's educational curriculum. As the Innovation Coordinator it is Mr. Chiuppi's charge to teach students what all this machinery can do. He is there to help students develop their planning skills, learn competencies with the tools and machinery, and help students bring their visions to life. Staff can email Mr. Chiuppi with ideas of hands on projects for collaboration. It is the goal of MiLAB to help teachers connect curriculum to project based learning in new ways that were not previously possible at MHS.
Further, since the MiLAB now has a manufacturing, construction, carpentry and furniture making capabilities it is the goal that students will learn hands on skills that can be transferred to the workforce. Residential and commercial construction along with manufacturing are large sectors of southeastern Massachusetts economy and the labor force needs students that understand the use of machines and tools. The MiLAB is proud to be able to offer introductory courses beginning next year and is excited to see the program grow in the future.
