Intro to Innovation Manufacturing Design -912IMD1
Through a series of exploratory labs and projects, students will engage with the engineering design process and learn the design fundamentals. These design centric projects introduce sketching techniques, 3d printing technology, CAD software, and manufacturing processes using state of art power tools and machinery. This course will emphasize the engineering design process which involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention. Students gain knowledge through collaboration exploration, documentation and develop problem solving skills by applying their knowledge to various design challenges. This course is intended for students interested in careers related to engineering, design, architecture, and manufacturing.
Course Objectives
Develop an understanding of the The Engineering Design Process
Apply the Engineering Design Process to several design projects that use a variety of manufacturing techniques
Understand how engineering, design, and manufacturing impacts and applies to society
Identify current careers and trends related to engineering, design, and manufacturing
Learn freehand sketch techniques to assist in creating and conveying design concepts
Develop skills necessary to create 3D drawings of assemblies, parts, and technical drawings using software applications such as,Onshape, and Adobe Illustrator.
Understand safety protocol and procedures related to working with machinery, tools,and hazardous materials
Identify appropriate tools and materials for certain design task and application
Develop proficiency in record keeping and reflection through the use of a digital engineering journal/portfolio
Learn goal setting strategies and techniques related to objective decision making
Gain experience in public speaking through presenting individual design solutions and feedback panels with peers
Learn to safely operate equipment, tools, and machinery to create functional design solutions
Exercise practical application of mathematical skills through the use of measurement and unit conversion

With a strong focus on real world applications, this course is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of manufacturing and design practices. Students will be introduced to the fabrication lab, offering hands-on experience that allows students to work collaboratively to solve open-ended problems that are relevant in the 21st century workplace. Projects focus on sustainable practices within the manufacturing industry and emphasize the importance of working with your hands and developing prototypes that are practical as well as functional. Students are introduced to state of the art machinery and equipment used in furniture building, product design, and construction. Students will continue to build on existing knowledge of the engineering design process and complete detailed project portfolios that showcase their creative process.
Course Objectives
Students will self select design projects and further develop an in depth understanding of the Engineering Design Process
Develop an understanding of sustainable practices related to manufacturing
Build upon hand sketching techniques such as perspective drawing, ideation sketches, and graphic renderings
Work with dimension, scale, symmetry and 3D drawing concepts through software such as Sketchup, Fusion 360, and Solidworks.
Understand tolerances and how they impact physical models and functional design solutions
Explore advanced manufacturing processes through rapid prototyping techniques using 3D printing, CNC, and laser cutting technology
Learn to safely operate equipment, tools, and machinery to create functional design solutions
Understand safety protocol and procedures related to working with machinery, tools,and hazardous materials
Understand and apply various types of joinery to specific projects and applications
Identify appropriate tools and materials for certain design task and application
Apply knowledge of material science, tool selection, and sustainability to correctly develop a bill of materials for design projects
Build on existing digital portfolio and incorporate projects to showcase the creative process
Establish appropriate ways of communicating through feedback panels with peers and project presentations.
Learn goal setting strategies and techniques related to objective decision making
