As we reflect on 2023, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the unwavering support and dedication of our educators, staff, consultants, and donors. This year has been one of significant accomplishments and transformative milestones, advancing our mission to innovate and inspire in education.

In 2023, we made substantial strides in research and development and refreshed our curriculum with new materials. Our digital initiatives flourished, fueled by in-school pilots for both MicroSociety 2.0 and our 4th Terra® society simulation game. And we completed an exciting brand makeover, led by our Drexel co-ops, that energized the look and feel of our products and communications.

The Pittsburgh Expansion Project, supported by a grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, laid the groundwork for establishing a regional center of excellence in Pittsburgh. We are preparing to add new MicroSociety sites in the area with Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship as a regional hub. University partnerships with Carnegie Mellon and West Liberty Universities have been instrumental in integrating cutting-edge programming to provide students with exciting new 21st century learning opportunities.

Throughout the year, we relished the many achievements of our partner schools. Whether at new MicroSociety schools like St. Mary’s in Canada or at veteran schools like Dufrocq Elementary in Louisiana, our professional services helped empower educators and students.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the many organizations and people who helped make 2023 an outstanding year of innovation and growth, including AG Strategic Design, CREATE Lab, and the Partnership for Public Service. Special thanks to the Richard King Mellon Foundation, TisBest Foundation, and the Lenfest Foundation for their generous support. MicroSociety Inc. continues to strengthen financially. In 2022, we saw solid revenue growth, driven by a 57% rise in consulting services. Increased investments in training and technical assistance delivery have been vital to our mission.

PITTSBURGH
INITIATIVE UPDATE

In 2023, our work in southwest Pennsylvania enabled significant progress in research and development, laying the groundwork for future expansion and impact in the region while creating a model for growth elsewhere.

Pittsburgh Expansion Project

We kicked off the Pittsburgh Expansion Project, thanks to a generous grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The project is led by a newly hired project director, Darlene Dingess-Adkins, a MicroSociety veteran and former Assistant Superintendent in Logan County, West Virginia. Darlene brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to our mission, and her leadership will be instrumental as we prepare to build a regional center of excellence and growth in Pittsburgh.

Preparing for Regional Growth

Throughout the year, we prepared to add two to three new MicroSociety sites in the Pittsburgh area. Our goal is to establish Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship as a regional hub and demonstration site that showcases the effectiveness of the MicroSociety model and helps us scale by facilitating the training of area educators.

University Partnerships

We formed strategic partnerships with Carnegie Mellon’s CREATE Lab and West Liberty University. These collaborations are vital as we integrate cutting-edge programming and innovative practices into our model, ensuring we remain at the forefront of education.

Third-Party Evaluations

In our commitment to continuous improvement, we undertook a third-party evaluation of MicroSociety 2.0 at Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship. This rigorous assessment will provide valuable insights that help us refine our approaches and maximize our impact on students and communities.

MicroSociety 2.0 Pilot

Our MicroSociety 2.0 pilot continued, enabling us to make exciting advancements, including the addition of a digital stock market. This innovative component allows student ventures to seek investors and for citizens to buy and sell shares on an online market. This hands-on experience in financial literacy and entrepreneurship equips students with skills that will be essential for their future success.

These achievements mark a significant step forward for our work in Pennsylvania. We are excited about the potential for growth and the positive impact we can make in the Pittsburgh area and beyond.

In 2023, our nonprofit achieved significant milestones across various domains, demonstrating our commitment to education, innovation, and community engagement. Here are the highlights:

Research & Development

New Model Components

We created a new “Firm Foundation” sequence, culminating in a Citizenship Contract, for the start of the school year. This process will guide MicroSociety schools to create stronger communities that reflect their core values. We also rolled out a new “Plan/Act/Reflect” framework to better shape the MicroTime schedule and prepared our training consultants to bring it to schools.

Curriculum

Major updates were made to our existing curriculum, including refreshes of our business venture guidebooks and digital versions of key MicroAdventures lessons for inclusion in MicroSociety 2.0. New materials introduced this year include a Teacher Facilitator Manual and Stock Market curriculum.

Visualizing Data Project

Collaborating with partners Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab and West Liberty University's Center for Arts and Education, we launched a data visualization initiative that is engaging MicroSociety students from Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship in using technology to understand how to work with data.

Digital Breakthroughs

MicroSociety 2.0 Web Portal

Our digital platform underwent a significant makeover to reflect our new branding. We introduced MicroSociety Career Tools, including the FutureFinder Engine, which allows students to explore career possibilities based on their interests. We also launched a pilot at Jersey City Global Charter School in New Jersey.

Digital Game Development

We launched a pilot of our 4th Terra society simulation game at Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship and gained student feedback that resulted in important enhancements. We secured a trademark for 4th Terra early in 2023.

Development of Digital Portals

We began developing two online portals that will provide comprehensive access to MSI content for teachers and training consultants, respectively, streamlining their experience.

Communications

Branding Makeover

Led by our Drexel co-ops, we refreshed our branding with new colors and a fluid design language that embodies the flexibility, creativity, and joy of the MicroSociety model.

Enhanced Video Content and
Social Presence

Our Communications Team released a slew of new videos, including MicroSociety student interviews for our Youth Now! YouTube series. We ramped up our social media activities, adopting dynamic, on-brand designs and diving into engaging formats like Reels.

These accomplishments underscore our dedication to advancing education through innovative methods, digital transformation, and robust community engagement. We are excited about the progress made in 2023 and look forward to building on this momentum in the coming years.

PARTNER SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS

When we work together, everyone succeeds. Our partner schools are proof the MicroSociety movement is growing and strengthening, transforming educational experiences and empowering students to thrive across diverse communities.

New School Highlight

Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada

In the 2023-24 school year, St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada, embraced the MicroSociety model, transforming education for its 127 K-8 students. The school, in a town of 2,700, serves a diverse community, including 84 Caucasian, 1 African, and 25 First Nation students, with 10% from lower socio-economic backgrounds, 34% with special needs, and 6% on the autism spectrum.

A highlight of St. Mary's MicroSociety is the Warehouse, managed by two highly organized student managers. Under their leadership, the Warehouse has become a well-oiled machine, ready to supply all student-run ventures.

On Action Days, guided by Consultants Allan Baile and Milt Williams, students showed attentiveness and enthusiasm, particularly during shopping activities. Facilitators have actively worked with students to enhance their experience and foster a culture of student voice and choice. Even in its early stages, St. Mary’s has made impressive progress in creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive.

Training Spotlights

East Baton, Louisiana, USA

The East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, school embarked on a transformative journey with consulting led by Kiana Smith and Darlene Dingess-Adkins. Sessions focused on creating an immersive culture and helping teachers integrate academic standards into student organizations and shift from traditional techniques to facilitation of learning. Initiatives like the MicroSociety Planning and Reflection Days challenged teachers to enhance scholar learning through “productive struggle” and reflection. Teachers and students alike were empowered to build a collaborative and reflective learning environment.

Yonkers, New York, USA

Exciting new initiatives are underway in Yonkers, New York. With guidance from Consultant Kiana Smith, Hostos's bank explored adding interest-earning opportunities like CDs to teach students about the importance of saving and investing and get them thinking about their financial futures. Hostos also developed a "Mini Micro" for PreK and Kindergarten students, who receive weekly pay for meeting five predefined expectations tied to weekly jobs and monthly Action Days. The approach empowers younger students and fosters leadership skills, setting a strong foundation for their future growth as MicroSociety citizens.

Texarkana, Arkansas, USA

The Texarkana, Arkansas, school is digging into data. Consulting by Mary Harris assisted an effort to use the Bureau of Data and Statistics agency to analyze reading and attendance data to support achievement of the school’s goals. North Heights also leveraged a variety of tools, including surveys, pre/post testing, observations with checklists, graphs, written reports, benchmark testing, and attitudinal surveys, all while ensuring the privacy of student data. Its comprehensive, data-driven approach is blazing a trail for MicroSociety schools everywhere.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Consulting by Darlene Dingess-Adkins and Michelle Pedalino at the Pittsburgh school helped stoke innovation and growth. PHCSE’s MicroSociety developed thriving new ventures and agencies based on students’ interests, Pittsburgh's economic needs, and new MSI offerings. For instance, MSI launched a pilot of a new stock market venture and online trading system. Each organization became actively engaged in goal setting, establishing missions, academic targets, and corporate social responsibility goals. Students' entrepreneurial achievements were celebrated on various “Walls of Fame” throughout the school. Facilitators set weekly academic goals with clear MicroSociety connections.

Oviedo, Florida, USA

Stenstrom Elementary of Oviedo, Florida, saw strong improvements in 2023. Consulting provided by Mary Harris and Michelle Pedalino helped ensure students took the lead during MicroTime, making decisions, engaging in meaningful work, and enjoying their shopping experiences. Transitions became smoother, and students showed respect for the Peacekeepers. Infractions decreased amid higher fines for offenses. Meanwhile, facilitators grew in confidence, both in guiding organizations and integrating standards. The consulting fostered a positive, dynamic environment where both students and facilitators thrive.

Teacher Spotlight

Jessica Drayer, the STEM teacher at Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship in Pittsburgh and facilitator of its robotics venture, has been a vital collaborator in the development of our innovative 3D society simulation game, 4th Terra. Beginning in March 2023, Jessica introduced 4th Terra to classes spanning 3rd to 8th grade. Her enthusiasm for integrating cutting-edge educational tools shone through as she resumed gameplay in September for the new school year.

Jessica's involvement has been instrumental in refining 4th Terra. Her keen insights and constructive feedback from her students have significantly influenced the game's development. Key improvements inspired by her suggestions included a save feature that allows teachers to pause and resume gameplay seamlessly and a manual fund-transfer option that lets teachers reward students for solving challenge cards.

Jessica's commitment to providing students with engaging, practical learning experiences epitomizes the innovative spirit of MicroSociety educators. Her contributions will enrich the educational journeys of countless students. We are grateful for her enthusiasm, curiosity, and love of learning and new adventures – and look forward to continued partnership and collaboration!

Student Spotlight

A Story of Transformation: Abigail's Journey

First-grader Abigail stood out for her “spirited” personality. She had difficulty paying attention in class, disrupted lessons with outbursts, and struggled to complete assignments. Her teachers and parents were concerned.

But everything began to change when Abigail, also known as Aby, founded a MicroSociety venture designing and selling colorful, unique bangles that her classmates and teachers adored. She had found a passion, and before long her behavior shifted.

“Aby is a changed child since she became the entrepreneur of her venture, Sparkle by Aby,” her mother said during a school board meeting. “She now tries to control her disruptive behavior in class and works independently on assignments. Aby feels she is a leader, and a leader serves as a model for others. We attribute this change to Micro and her work as an entrepreneur.”

Abigail's transformation shows the power of harnessing a child's passion and energy to create positive change. Her journey shows the importance of nurturing individual talents and providing supportive environments. Today, Abigail not only behaves at school, she serves as an inspiration to her peers, demonstrating that, with a little creativity and support, challenges become opportunities for growth.

MicroSociety Story

Meet CJ Hayes, an alumnus of Garehime Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada. In this spotlight, CJ recounts his journey as the young Mayor of his MicroSociety, sharing the challenges, triumphs, and invaluable lessons he learned along the way. Hear what it was like to be mentored by the then-Mayor of Las Vegas and receive keys to the city!

One of CJ's proudest accomplishments was working with his classmates to design a park, which now stands proudly across the street from their school. Today, CJ works in medical-device sales and runs his own art-studio business, striving to better his community in the process. He attributes his leadership, collaboration, sales and business savvy to his time in MicroSociety.

EVENTS &
SCHOOL SUPPORT

In 2023, our team innovated how we support schools across the school year. A successful Summer Seminar and new virtual tools like "MicroChats" and "MicroForum" empower educators to share, connect, and thrive.

Summer Seminar

Our July 11 virtual seminar for MicroSociety educators was a resounding success. Participants developed tailored action plans for fall leveraging fresh perspectives and insights. Experienced MicroSociety educators and trainers helped participants turn their ideas into practical implementation steps. Participants connected with each other and exchanged ideas, best practices, and success stories. And they gained new resources, including templates, guides, opportunities for continued support.

New School Supports

Our commitment to connection soared with the rollout of virtual “MicroChats” with school leadership teams and coordinator roundtables. We created “MicroForum,” a private Google chat space where MicroSociety educators can ask questions and get and share tips. And we began developing “MicroPortal,” a website that will become the go-to place for curriculum and classroom materials.

Consultant Gathering

From August 7-10 in Philadelphia, MicroSociety consultants gathered in person for the first time in nearly a decade. This historic meeting sparked renewed collaboration, facilitated shared insights, and strengthened our collective vision for the future.

30th Annual Conference Preparation

Fresh off the Summer Seminar, our staff began planning for a milestone: MSI’s 30th annual conference to be held in person at Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship in March 2024, following two years of virtual events.
