World Book Week has been bigger and more vibrant than ever before! The enthusiasm from both staff and students has truly made this year’s celebration special.
Throughout the week, we have welcomed author Claire Hatcher-Smith who inspired our young readers in KS2 with her stories and creativity. Additionally, we hosted virtual sessions that allowed our children to engage with literature in new and exciting ways. Our competitions brought out a fantastic spirit of fun and creativity, and students spent time participating in events such as flashlight reading and ‘Drop Everything and Read’.
The costumes were absolutely fantastic for World Book Day, and I would like to extend my congratulations to the winners of both the Extreme Reading and the Book in a Box competitions! Effort and imagination have really shone through, and it was heartening to see how much passion the children have for reading. It was also lovely to see such a great turnout to our reading cafe- we hope you all had a wonderful time.
As part of our activities, each class has created some wonderful poetry inspired by our book ‘Change Sings’. The children have shown remarkable talent and insight into the theme of change, and it has been a joy to see their work and we look forward to it being displayed around school.
Finally, a quick reminder that our sponsored readathon is still live and will continue until Sunday. Please remember to bring in any sponsor money by Wednesday next week. Alternatively, you can also make payments online here. Readathon Sponsorship Page
Thank you for your continued support in promoting reading and fostering a love of literature in our children. Let’s keep the momentum going as we inspire our young readers to make stories a part of their everyday lives!
Have a fantastic weekend and STAY SAFE!
Our Year 5 and Reception classes had a muddy start to their Forest School sessions!
We had fun playing games, learning about different types of soil, exploring the seasonal changes to our Forest School and even had a go at doing some yoga!
A great big thank you to all of the children who participated in our sponsored yogathon and lego walk! An extended thank you to everyone for the money that was raised. We have raised an amazing £2300 which will go towards funding exciting events for science week including a planetarium! The rest of the money will update our science equipment and hopefully enable us to bring science to life in school.
It's been another fantastic week of learning at Micklem! All children have been working so hard and trying their best in all subjects.
In Year 2, the children have been reading about King Arthur in Guided Reading. They read the text and explored the vocabulary earlier in the week and then used their comprehension skills to answer questions about the text. Take a look at Ayla's super sentences about Arthur and Merlin.
This half-term, Year 3 have been focusing on 'Rocks' in Science. In one lesson, they were really excited to learn all about fossils. Poppy created a comic strip to show how a fossil is formed and was able to use super scientific vocabulary such as 'minerals', 'eroded' and 'decay'. Well done Year 3!
This week, the whole school has been working on poetry inspired by the poet Amanda Gorman. Have a look at an extra from Isla's poem about change.
Change begins with a heart filled with courage
Change is a person filled with kindness
In which they spread like confetti
I can hear change humming
Slowly but gently it's coming.
End hunger, spread hope
Homes for the homeless, they cannot cope.
They don't your coins, they need change.
Recycle your rubbish, reduce your food waste, reuse your old things
Can you already hear your change sing?
Water runs free,
The difference starts with you and me.
The children were lucky enough to make and eat pancakes (or crêpes) with the lovely Miss Lopez. Children in KS2 were able to follow a French recipe and instructions. By the end of the day, Miss Lopez had managed to make a whopping 163 pancakes with the children!
This year, we have introduced Class Dojo. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:
Be Kind.
Show Respect.
Aim High.
Children will be able to receive one or two points for these core values from any member of staff. We will keep an eye on which individuals, classes and house groups are being the kindest, most respectful and ambitious over the year.

We are moving in to that time of year where parents and carers need to make a decision on their children's Nursery for September. With that in mind, we would love to invite you to our Nursery Open Mornings. Whether you are looking for 15 or 30 hours of Nursery, we can facilitate that. Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and After School Club are also available to our Nursery children for an additional charge. Please let your friends and family know about these open mornings, 30 hours is still new to us, so the local community might be less aware that we offer it. We offer the following dates: 11th March, 20th March. If you cannot make these dates, then please contact the School Office and we will arrange a different time for you. We look forward to seeing you there.
17th-21st March is our Science week. The week will be filled with many exciting opportunities and events, which have been made possible due to your kindness and generosity towards the sponsored Lego Walk! There will be opportunities for some classes to go and experience Science at a secondary school; river studies at Gadebridge Park; wild Science assemblies and much more! Please remember to enter our Science fair which will take place on Friday 21st March and is being judged by our local MP.
17th - 24th March is also Neurodiversity Celebration week. Click on the image to find out more.
"When it comes to inclusion, neurodiversity refers to a world where neurological differences are recognised and respected as all other human variations. Depending on how our brains are wired we think, move, process information and communicate in different ways. Many people in our community use neurodiversity as an umbrella term used to describe alternative thinking styles such as Dyslexia, DCD (Dyspraxia), Dyscalculia, Autism and ADHD. But regardless of labels, neurodiversity is about recognising those who think differently. And no matter whether you are a school, university or organisation you can benefit from different thinkers!"

Letters
Please find all of our latest letters here: https://www.micklem.herts.sch.uk/letters/ . If you have any questions regarding anything coming up, do not hesitate to ask.
Nut Allergies
I would like to remind all parents and carers that we are a nut free school. This means that nuts should not be present or consumed on site. Please ensure that you do not send nuts or products that contain nuts into school with your child. This is for the safety and wellbeing of our children who suffer with nut allergies. It is incredibly important that this rule is followed at all times.
Toys and Fidgets
Please can I remind you that children should not be bringing toys or fidgets into school. This is for many reasons, including children becoming upset if they get lost or damaged.
If it has been agreed in a meeting with our SENCO, Ms Palmer, that your child needs a sensory or fidget toy to support their learning, this will be provided by school.
