The Christmas period has well and truly started! Nativity practices are picking up speed and everyone has Christmas songs stuck in their heads! Over the next couple of weeks there are lots of opportunities for our children to share in Christmas Cheer and we are thrilled by some of the opportunities that we have already had. Learning has continued in and amongst all of this, with classes going on trips and some truly incredible pieces of writing that I have seen recently. I am looking forward to seeing more Christmas maths questions around the corner (normally to do with who ate the most minced pies) as children continue to use and apply their skills and knowledge from over the term. It is a wonderful time of year, and we wouldn't want any of our children to miss out on the learning and festive opportunities that we have planned for them, so please ensure that if they are well, they are in.
I am looking forward to spending time with our parents and carers at the various Christmas events coming up, so please come and support your child, the school and its staff as we Step Into Christmas.
Have a fantastic weekend and STAY SAFE!
On Tuesday 26th November, Year 6 had an amazing day out to Duxford, Imperial War museum. We explored the 'Battle of Britain' hanger to understand the impact of WW2 on the homefront. We even got to make our own documentaries, which we will share at a later date! During our visit we got to experience what it was like on board a plane in the 1950's and got to experience the inside of a Concorde. A lovely lady even let us hold a variety of guns. Don't worry - they were deactivated! Year 6 had a great day and behaved beautifully.
Last week, ten amazing Year 5 children went to Abbotts Hill school to take part in a Dodgeball competition. Lots of other local schools attended and Micklem played six different matches throughout the morning. The children played fantastically and used the skills they have been developing over the last five weeks in their PE lessons. Although we didn't win this time, all the children had a great time and showed fantastic teamwork and effort. Well done Micklem!
We had a visit from a pupil who left Micklem in 1978. He met with Mr Swift and was given a tour of the school. He shared interesting facts about the school including the location of the old swimming pool and that there used to be a wall that split the playground up. When he reached the Year 6 classroom, we were able to ask him some questions about his time at school. He said that the building looks the same, but that there are nice new things (like play equipment and screens in the classrooms). He also said that Mr Swift seemed a lot nicer than Headteacher's used to be! We also found out that the Micklem uniform used to be green and included a tie and a hat!
As well as taking part in the BIGGEST EVER SHOW AND TELL on No Pens Day, the whole school took part in a variety of learning activities involving speaking and listening throughout the day. Many of the children said they wished it was no pens day everyday!
On Friday 29th November the children were invited to come into school dressed in Christmas Pyjama's! It was lovely seeing so many jolly faces and everyone getting into the Christmas spirit. Thank you to all of our parents/carers for your support of amazing donations for the Christmas Fayre.
Our Forest School helpers made 'damper bread' and we toasted them on our fire this week at Forest School.
Lots of the children said how delicious it tasted and asked for more!
Archie in Yr 5 commented that he, "Really enjoys helping the younger children, playing and using tools to make stuff."
On Wednesday 4th December, some Year 3s joined local B&M Care Home residents for their Chirstmas party. There was lots of festive cheer, food, drinks, songs and fun! There was even a visit from Santa! We have returned the invitation to our friends at B&M Care Homes and are hoping that some of their residents will join us for our Nativity performances and for Carols Around the Tree.
This year, we have introduced Class Dojo. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:
Be Kind.
Show Respect.
Aim High.
Children will be able to receive one or two points for these core values from any member of staff. We will keep an eye on which individuals, classes and house groups are being the kindest, most respectful and ambitious over the year.
