We have had a brilliant couple of weeks full of learning experiences and fun! While the weather has not been too kind, we have still found opportunities to get outside (all wrapped up) and make the most of the blue skies, when they have been around.
Our 30-hour Nursery is blossoming and we are seeing huge progress being made by the children as they settle into their new environment. In addition to this, our new look Breakfast Club (now starting at 7:30) is working in a more dynamic and child-led way - more information further down. Year 6 were pizza chefs for the day at Pizza Express and even got to eat their creations for their lunch! Today everyone dressed up as a Scientist/Invention to raise money for activities over Science Week - everyone looked fab and no matter how simple or complicated the costume - it was brilliant to see everyone celebrating science!
Have a fantastic weekend and STAY SAFE!
Year 6 spent the morning of Tuesday 21st January being chefs. They went to a local Pizza Express and were taught how to make their own pizzas. They all created a Margharita pizza and ate it at Gadebridge Park! The pizzas looked and smelt delicious - so parents, make sure that your children start cooking you dinner at home! We all had a great time!
This week Year 3 and 4 used a hacksaw and secateurs to cut up a Christmas tree!
We also looked at habitats and minibeasts, ending with a woodlouse hunt!
It was so wonderful to see so many children embrace STEM day, we had a huge range of costumes from washing machines to vets! We were super impressed with the hard-work that had gone into these costumes and the children were thrilled to show them off in assembly! Thank you for your efforts and contributions which will go towards making STEM week an amazing experience.
This week, children from Year 4 and 5 took part in a fantastic cycling project provided by Herts Disability Sports Foundation. Although the weather was very wet, this didn't dampen Micklem's spirits! Lots of children got straight on their bikes and were practising their skills by navigating cones and also braking to avoid obstacles (mainly the adults!). The coaches were really supportive of those children who were a bit apprehensive and quickly had them on bikes with no pedals to develop their balance. Sophie in Year 5 said she 'Loved it and that it helped people who had never ridden a bike before.' By the end of the session, it was wonderful to see children who at first were nervous, confidently riding round on bikes and feeling so proud of themselves - as they should be. Well done Year 4 and 5.
“Devastatingly Lila sank to the molten floor. A glimpse of a spark suddenly shot out of the empty, bare wall. And another. Then five more scorching flames came flying out. Then an entire wall collapsed into a bundle of flames, which uncovered a vast cavern the size of five redwood trees.” - Tamsyn (Year 4)
‘ I stood at the edge of the deep abyss. I stared, it had exactly 11 yellow spots and a red ring around the eye which gave it a menacing look. I stumbled as it lengthened its milky white tongue and bared its charcoal black teeth at me.’ - Liara (Year 6)
Our relaunch of Breakfast Club has now begun! Breakfast will now be served throughout the session, so children can choose when they want something to eat, and children who arrive later will still be offered breakfast. Children will be encouraged to develop their independence and will prepare their own breakfast where possible. We are also looking to appoint some Breakfast Club Monitors, older children who will support the younger children to develop their independence. Children will also now have the flexibility to choose between our three areas: quiet/seated activities; active games in the hall; or play outside. All of these areas will be supervised and children will have the flexibility to move between the activities freely. We are keen to ensure that all children that access our Breakfast Club have a positive start to their day and this includes being fed, fit and having fun! Some of the activities that we now offer include:
Playdough
Painting
Reading
Maths activities (the children asked for these)
Lego
Colouring
Board Games
Team Games
Puzzles
And so much more
We are also going to start to bring in theme days in Breakfast Club, with 'Messy Monday' the starting point' - there will be arts and crafts available in the quiet area; ropes and apparatus available in the hall and then activities outside. Children who came to Breakfast Club today will have chocolate-crispy-cakes to bring home as a bonus - I hope they made them home!
Breakfast Club runs Monday to Friday 7:30 - 8:45. Children from Nursery to Year 6 are welcome. There are 45 spaces each day and the cost is £4.50 per session or £3.50 per session for pupil premium children. Further information can be found on our website: https://www.micklem.herts.sch.uk/wrap-around-care/

This year, we have introduced Class Dojo. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:
Be Kind.
Show Respect.
Aim High.
Children will be able to receive one or two points for these core values from any member of staff. We will keep an eye on which individuals, classes and house groups are being the kindest, most respectful and ambitious over the year.

This year Children's Mental Health Week takes place from 3rd - 9th February.
Organised by the Children's Mental Health charity 'Place2Be', this year's theme is Know Yourself, Grow Yourself. The aim is to equip and empower children across the UK to embrace self-awareness and explore what it means to them.
On Tuesday 4th February children from Year 1 - 6 will complete a workshop linked to this theme with Lauren, our link Educational Mental Health Practitioner from the NHS. Like Place2Be, we want children at Micklem to discover how getting to know who they are can help them build resilience, grow and develop.

We are moving in to that time of year where parents and carers need to make a decision on their children's Nursery for September. With that in mind, we would love to invite you to our Nursery Open Mornings. Whether you are looking for 15 or 30 hours of Nursery, we can facilitate that. Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and After School Club are also available to our Nursery children for an additional charge. Please let your friends and family know about these open mornings, 30 hours is still new to us, so the local community might be less aware that we offer it. We offer the following dates: 12th February, 11th March, 20th March. If you cannot make these dates, then please contact the School Office and we will arrange a different time for you. We look forward to seeing you there.

Letters
Please find all of our latest letters here: https://www.micklem.herts.sch.uk/letters/ . If you have any questions regarding anything coming up, do not hesitate to ask.
Nut Allergies
I would like to remind all parents and carers that we are a nut free school. This means that nuts should not be present or consumed on site. Please ensure that you do not send nuts or products that contain nuts into school with your child. This is for the safety and wellbeing of our children who suffer with nut allergies. It is incredibly important that this rule is followed at all times.
Toys and Fidgets
Please do not send your child into school with a toy from home (including fidget toys) unless this has been confirmed in a meeting with Ms Palmer, our SENCO. We will always facilitate fidgets where they will support a child's learning, but will go through proper procedures first.

Our Valentine's 'Friendship' Disco is taking place on Thursday 13th February. If your child would like to attend then please book their place on Arbor by Monday 10th February.
