We have had a brilliant half term and what a way to finish it off with our PTA disco last night and 'wear what you love day' today. Learning has continued to be inspiring and engaging for all of our children and it is hard to believe that we are halfway through the academic year already! We are all looking forward to leaving winter behind and seeing what Spring holds for our school.
There is so much to look forward to in the new term and we start with a chance to invite you in to discuss the progress that your child is making. You can now book your appointments for a meeting with their teacher via Arbor. Meetings will take place on Tuesday 25th and Thursday 27th February. We look forward to seeing you then and working with you to continue to support your child's development and learning.
Have a wonderful break and we will see you all on Monday 24th February.
Have a fantastic weekend and STAY SAFE!
What better way to end this half term at Forest school, than to have a fire with hot dogs and marshmallows!
"This is the best day ever!!!" was the theme of the sessions, along with some fantastic perseverance from both adults and children when having a go with the flint and steel.
Last Thursday, the Year 1 children took an exciting trip to the British Schools Museum. The day began with the children getting into their Victorian school children costumes including pinafores, waistcoats and collars. The children then took part in a normal Victorian school day. They completed their three 'R's. Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic, but they had to use feather quills and slate boards! The children then had the opportunity to explore lots of different Victorian toys and particularly loved the jack in the box and the kaleidoscopes.
On Tuesday, Micklem came together to celebrate and learn about Safer Internet Day. The theme was 'too good to be true' and it taught the children all about protecting themselves and others from scams online. The children already had fantastic knowledge from their Computing and PSHE lessons and were able to share the SMART rules for being online and knew always to tell a trusted adult if they needed help or guidance with being online. All classes took part in activities about Safer Internet Day as part of their Computing lesson this week and Year 6 created some fantastic posters for the school.
Years 1,3 and 4 had a great experience this week in their glow dance sessions. They had the opportunity to dance in the dark with different glow sticks. Lots of fun was had by all!
This years theme for children's mental health awareness week was 'know yourself, grow yourself.'
We had a visit from Lauren (SEND mental health support team) who ran a workshop on recognising our strengths and thinking about how we would achieve our goals.
Lot's of fun was had by all at the ever popular PTA Valentine's 'Friendship' Disco on Thursday 13th February. It was lovely to see so many children attending and having a good time singing and dancing. It was particular nice to see children demonstrating our school values by 'being kind' and buying gifts for their friends from the gift shop.
There has been some amazing learning in classrooms over the last two weeks. Children in Year 1 have been reading the book 'The Squirrels who Squabbled' and then wrote their own fantastic versions of the story. This included two cheetahs squabbling over their prey, two spiders squabbling over a web and two cats squabbling over a ball of yarn. Take a look at Evie's amazing story and Michael's Book in a Box inspired by the story.
Year 6 have been getting creative in their Art lessons. They have focused this half-term on Monet and his water lily paintings. Working together, they have created a group final piece that involved using paint and gauze to create the background (no paintbrushes!) and card, paper and split-pins to create the waterlily.
Year 4 have been practicing their golf skills in PE this term and finished the term off by creating their own mini golf obstacle courses.
Nursery and Reception had a visit from Miss Noble, who is a volunteer police officer, with some of her police kit. We talked about what the police do, how they can help and how fast the police cars go!
Our relaunch of Breakfast Club has now begun! Breakfast will now be served throughout the session, so children can choose when they want something to eat, and children who arrive later will still be offered breakfast. Children will be encouraged to develop their independence and will prepare their own breakfast where possible. We are also looking to appoint some Breakfast Club Monitors, older children who will support the younger children to develop their independence. Children will also now have the flexibility to choose between our three areas: quiet/seated activities; active games in the hall; or play outside. All of these areas will be supervised and children will have the flexibility to move between the activities freely. We are keen to ensure that all children that access our Breakfast Club have a positive start to their day and this includes being fed, fit and having fun! Some of the activities that we now offer include:
Playdough
Painting
Reading
Maths activities (the children asked for these)
Lego
Colouring
Board Games
Team Games
Puzzles
And so much more
We are also going to start to bring in theme days in Breakfast Club, with 'Messy Monday' the starting point' - there will be arts and crafts available in the quiet area; ropes and apparatus available in the hall and then activities outside. Children who came to Breakfast Club today will have chocolate-crispy-cakes to bring home as a bonus - I hope they made them home!
Breakfast Club runs Monday to Friday 7:30 - 8:45. Children from Nursery to Year 6 are welcome. There are 45 spaces each day and the cost is £4.50 per session or £3.50 per session for pupil premium children. Further information can be found on our website: https://www.micklem.herts.sch.uk/wrap-around-care/

We are moving in to that time of year where parents and carers need to make a decision on their children's Nursery for September. With that in mind, we would love to invite you to our Nursery Open Mornings. Whether you are looking for 15 or 30 hours of Nursery, we can facilitate that. Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and After School Club are also available to our Nursery children for an additional charge. Please let your friends and family know about these open mornings, 30 hours is still new to us, so the local community might be less aware that we offer it. We offer the following dates: 11th March, 20th March. If you cannot make these dates, then please contact the School Office and we will arrange a different time for you. We look forward to seeing you there.

House Captains
House Captains, with support from Year 6 have been raising money for playground equipment. So far, they have invested in: new table tennis equipment; new hula hoops, new skipping ropes, cats cradles and more. I have even heard discos happening on the playground at lunchtime this week! Great effort team - keep it up!
Letters
Please find all of our latest letters here: https://www.micklem.herts.sch.uk/letters/ . If you have any questions regarding anything coming up, do not hesitate to ask.
Nut Allergies
I would like to remind all parents and carers that we are a nut free school. This means that nuts should not be present or consumed on site. Please ensure that you do not send nuts or products that contain nuts into school with your child. This is for the safety and wellbeing of our children who suffer with nut allergies. It is incredibly important that this rule is followed at all times.
Toys and Fidgets
Please do not send your child into school with a toy from home (including fidget toys) unless this has been confirmed in a meeting with Ms Palmer, our SENCO. We will always facilitate fidgets where they will support a child's learning, but will go through proper procedures first.
PTA
Please see the latest PTA Newsletter that has been sent out to parent/carers today for all of the amazing things that have taken place this half term.
We have lots more exciting events planned for 2025! Watch this space for more information.
