We are continuing to have a fantastic start to 2026-27! We have had more trips and experiences; incredible examples of learning; and opportunities for parents to engage with their children's learning.
I want to thank everyone that has attended our events so far. We have had coffee sessions, reading cafes and the travelling book fair to name a few. I know that life can be incredibly busy, but I want to encourage you to attend any events that you can. We will have some specific events that some parents and carers will be invited to, we will also have events that are open to everyone. These are great opportunities to peak behind the curtain and see what your child gets upto in school - there may even be bits that you can use at home!
We hope to see you all at an event soon.
Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe!
Mr. Swift
Our book focus has been 'Chattysaurus', we discussed how listening is important to make friends and to stay safe. We explored all types of dinosaurs and made salt dough fossils. We finished the week in forest school, listening to our fire circle rules and toasting marshmallows on a campfire.
In Reception we have been very busy. We have started learning our new sounds in Phonics and have been sorting, matching and comparing in Maths. Our book of the week 'Leaf Man' has supported us in learning about the signs of Autumn. We had great fun collecting leaves and making our own 'leaf man'. One of us even made a leaf 'chicken'. We also made observational drawings and paintings of Autumnal objects. We have been practicing fine motor skills to help strengthen our fingers and wrists in preparation for writing and we have explored the letters in our names.
It's been another busy couple of weeks in Year One. Firstly, we have been practising how to write our numbers correctly with our magic pens. We have also learnt how to describe two numbers using greater than, less than and equals.
We have learnt about human features and physical features in geography. We made our houses and streets with loose parts. In English, we have been getting to grips with some grammar! What is a noun? What is a verb? We have been using Colourful Semantics to help us build sentences.
We have started Phase 5 in phonics and have been blending new sounds and words. Mrs Stokley is very proud!
It has been another fantastic week of learning in Year 2! In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of part-whole models and exploring flexible partitioning. In English, we have been learning about setting descriptions and used our five senses to write descriptive vocabulary for the North Pole setting from our class text, The Great Explorer. In Science, we investigated the strength of different materials by building bridges and testing which materials could hold the greatest number of cubes, making predictions and discussing our findings. In Art, we explored buildings and architecture, focusing particularly on St Basil’s Cathedral, where we looked closely at its bright colours, detailed patterns and interesting shapes. It has been a brilliant week of learning, creativity and exploration in Year 2!
It has been another fantastic two weeks of discovery for the Sunshine Learning Community, with super learning on display from everyone! In science, our curious learners have continued to dive deep into forces and magnets. In our art lessons we have continued to study the abstract masterworks of Wassily Kandinsky. The creativity didn't stop there; our young authors have begun to write their very own brilliant adaptations of The Sheep and The Goat, tracing the story's unique traditional Norwegian and Russian roots.
Another two weeks have flown by in Year 3 and it has been super busy!! The children have continued writing and finishing their explanation text in English, and come to the end of their place value unit. We are now starting our addition and subtraction unit, exciting!
Art, we have been focusing on improving our observational skills, and taking our time when sketching different natural resources. In computing, we are learning to code, test and debug different programmes on Purple Mash.
We have had a very busy last few weeks in Year 4. we have started Toot lessons, which is the instrument that we will be learning this year.
In English we have been writing instructions on how to improve snozzcumbers and make them more edible and delicious. We have seen some brilliant vocabulary and very creative ideas from all of the children.
Over the last couple of weeks, Year 5 have finished writing their internal monologue as Auggie from our class book 'Wonder'. We have now moved on to writing a formal letter to the head teacher (Mr Tushman) on how to promote kindness.
We have also finished painting our planets which will now be able to go on display. In our next Science lesson, we will be making sundials!
Year 6 have had a busy two weeks. We have completed our narrative based on Skellig and have now started a balanced argument. In maths, we have looked at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In Science, we made our own blood, measuring out the exact amounts carefully and we also attended the Crucial Crew event at the fire station. Here we had lots of fun learning CPR, water rescue, fire safety and internet safety. We had a great time.
It's conker season!! We had great fun using them to make woodland creatures and other funny faces, we even had a Mr Potato head!
Week 2 was a bit more serious, with the children having a go at lighting some cotton wool, using only a flint aand steel. We talked about what 3 elements we need to make a fire; I wonder if they can remember?
Art club found out that it is quite hard to draw a self-portrait! We took inspiration from the painting by Elizabeth Vigée Le Brun and used small mirrors to help us reflect on our own features.
" How did she do it ?" asked one child " I can't get it to look like me ! "
Nevertheless, noone gave up. Although our portraits are not quite finished yet, they are looking quite good already.
We also remembered to include a clue about what we love. Some of us love football, tennis or reading, while others wanted to show , like Elizabeth, that they are good at painting .
This year, we have introduced Golden Points. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:
Be Kind. Show Respect. Aim High.
This will then be rewarded with Golden TIme activities on a Friday afternoon.

Fundraising
Thank you to everyone who donated generously to our two most recent fundraising events. We raised £62 for Macmillan and £134.65 for Jeans for Genes.
Pupil Leadership
Our Food schools ambassadors the Lemondades, are looking forward to their visit from our Nourish project officer Ruby next week.
School Council
Each class has now chosen two school councillors to represent them on the School Council. These pupils will share their classmates’ ideas, help make decisions, and take part in projects to improve our school. We’re proud of everyone who put themselves forward and look forward to seeing the great work our new councillors will do this year!
Wraparound Care
Breakfast Club have been exploring the nutritional and cost benefits of making your own food instead of buying processed versions. They have made their own pancakes from scratch this week and they looked and smelt incredible!
Notices and Reminders
Please may we take this opportunity to remind parents/carers of our uniform expectations. Children should wear:
● Navy sweatshirt or cardigan
● White polo shirt
● Black trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore (No jogging bottoms, leggings or cycling/fitted shorts)
● Black shoes or entirely black trainers. (no boots or colourful trainers)
Pe kit:
Navy pe top
Navy shorts or jogging bottoms (no fitted or branded shorts please)
Trainers
Children should also have a named pair of wellies in school.
All items should be clearly named to help identify lost property. Items of uniform can be purchased through our supplier Mapac. We thank you in advance for your support in promoting pride in our school community.
Concentration Aids
I would also like to remind parents and carers that children should not be bringing toys (including fidgets) from home into school. This is for a number of reasons, not least that your children get very upset if their toy gets misplaced or broken.
Each class has a new box of 'concentration aids' this academic year, which any child can use to support them with their learning.
Letters
Please find all of our latest letters here: https://www.micklem.herts.sch.uk/letters/
