What an amazing week of learning! Micklem children have been completely immersed in Science Week this week and have learnt so much and taken part in so many experiences. Take a look at the Science Week section to find out more about your child's learning this week.
What an exciting and inspiring week we've had at Micklem! Our Science Week has been a resounding success, filled with engaging activities, hands-on learning, and awe-inspiring experiences. Here's a recap of the highlights.
Planetarium Experience
Our children had the incredible opportunity to explore the stars, planets, and galaxies with a visit to our very own inflatable planetarium. The immersive experience sparked curiosity and wonder as we journeyed through Space!
Mobile Zoo Animal Experience
On Tuesday, our school welcomed a mobile zoo and lots of creatures into our own hall. The children were able to get up close and personal with animals from around the world including a python, a rabbit called Bunny, meerkats and a skunk!
Super STEM Visitors
Micklem School is lucky enough to have some families and parents who work in STEM. Penny and Isabella's Mum and her colleagues came to Micklem and told the children all about her work at a company called Smiths Detection. The children were then able to use one of the security detection machines to test and inspect areas of the hall.
Carousel of Science Activities
Friday was a whirlwind of fun with our Carousel of Science Activities! The children rotated through a series of interactive experiments and investigation, each one designed to teach them something new and exciting about the world of science. This included testing out which liquids removed stains the best and racing scooters across different surfaces to investigate friction.
Trips out - Gadebridge Park and Laureate School
Our Year 5 and 6 children were excited to visit Laureate School for an extra special secondary school science lesson. It was an amazing opportunity for them to work with other students and experience science in a school laboratory. The children tested out the PH Level of different liquids and learnt how to be safe and curious Scientists.
Year 4 and 6 were lucky enough to visit Gadebridge Park for a River Study. They completed activities including collecting specimens from the river and examining them. Iosif and Emily were able to identify a bloodworm and lots of shrimps in their samples.
Science Fair
We are concluding our amazing week with a Science Fair, which is being judged by Local MP for Hemel Hempstead, David Taylor. Already we have seen some fantastic entries coming in including volcanoes, which will be erupting at the event, a tornado investigation and magnetic slime!
A big thank you to Mrs Walker, our amazing Science lead, and all the staff, families and children who helped make this week such a success. The enthusiasm and excitement from our students have made this year's Science Week truly unforgettable!
In Forest School this week, we enjoyed digging for special rocks and looking at filtration. We made friendship bracelets by 'nordic slinging' and made silhouette pictures, using natural objects and diluted food colouring for spray paint!
In Art Club, the children were working in pairs to make their own art work inspired by the Italian artist Canaletto. They used different shapes of pasta and cannot wait to go and see the " real Canaletto " on our school trip.
This year, we have introduced Class Dojo. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:
Be Kind.
Show Respect.
Aim High.
Children will be able to receive one or two points for these core values from any member of staff. We will keep an eye on which individuals, classes and house groups are being the kindest, most respectful and ambitious over the year.

Learning of the Week
Every week, we celebrate extraordinary learning that has taken place in classes. It may be that they have pushed passed an obstacle in their learning; worked on their presentation; thought about how to help others amongst other things.
Our Learning of the Week for the last fortnight goes to:
Year 1
Frankie - This week Frankie has worked really hard in English and independently writing some amazing descriptive sentences.
Wyatt - This week in Maths Wyatt has worked really hard when looking at measuring objects around the classroom in cubes. He worked well will his friends and showed amazing communication skills.
Year 2
Harley - Good use of our 3 sentence types in our advert.
SJ - SJ has settled confidently back into year 3 maths lessons. He is completing learning tasks, working well with his table partner and asking adults when he needs something.
Year 3
Poppi - Poppi has shown a fantastic attitude towards English this week. She has been able to understand and include direct speech in her work.
Charlie - Charlie has been fantastic with fractions over the last couple of weeks, but especially Wednesday when placing equivalent fractions on a number line.
Year 4
Cillian - Cillian showed such great enthusiasm and excitement on our trip this week. He was keen to share his knowledge as well as being incredibly respectful to our guide, who was explaining how the WOOFYT works!
Leo S - Leo used his thesaurus skills to find some excellent synonyms for words we can use when writing about The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
Year 5
Olivia - Olivia has worked really hard with her understanding of perimeter and area. Although she found it difficult at first, she persevered!
James - James should be so proud of his super Science knowledge. He always participates in class discussions and is a role model for his use of scientific vocabulary. I’m excited to see what you achieve next week as part of Science Week!
Year 6
Izzy - Izzy has shown so much kindness to a new member of our class. She has been so helpful and patient and we couldn’t be prouder of you.
Janel and Jimmy - In French, Miss Lopez was so impressed with Janel and Jimmy’s confidence when talking to their French pen friends. They really tried hard and were aiming high. Well done both of you!
Sunshine Group- KS1
Natali - Natali, you have followed instructions and given everything a go on your own. You showed great resilience with the makaton for the word of the week “make”.
Sunshine Group-KS2
Emberly - Emberly, you were an absolute super leader at forest school today. You helped all the nursery children and participated in the activities showing respect to all.

Letters
Please find all of our latest letters here: https://www.micklem.herts.sch.uk/letters/ . If you have any questions regarding anything coming up, do not hesitate to ask.
Nut Allergies
I would like to remind all parents and carers that we are a nut free school. This means that nuts should not be present or consumed on site. Please ensure that you do not send nuts or products that contain nuts into school with your child. This is for the safety and wellbeing of our children who suffer with nut allergies. It is incredibly important that this rule is followed at all times.
Toys and Fidgets
Please can I remind you that children should not be bringing toys or fidgets into school. This is for many reasons, including children becoming upset if they get lost or damaged.
If it has been agreed in a meeting with our SENCO, Ms Palmer, that your child needs a sensory or fidget toy to support their learning, this will be provided by school.
