On Monday, it was our annual Sports Day! The children took part in a carousel of activities including axe throwing, space hopper races, bean bag throws and the classic, egg and spoon race. They all tried their best and loved showing friends and families their skills. They then took part in the flat races, winning lots of points for their house group and being cheered on by the school. Well done everyone - you were fantastic team players!
It was lovely to bring lots of Micklem families together for a picnic lunch. Thank you everyone that was able to attend and to our wonderful PTA who kept us full of energy with Krispy Kreme donuts on supply.
On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have Coach Charlie, from a local boxing club, run sessions with Years 2-6. As part of their workshop, they learnt how to jab - one person was holding the pads and one person wearing gloves. Then they worked on their balance by throwing and catching a bean bag whilst standing on one leg. The children did fantastically, as did Miss Varney and Miss Noble, who couldn't resist having a go themselves!
On Wednesday, Year 5 and 6 went to Little Hay to play footgolf. They had to kick a football into a hole, using a golf course, aiming to complete the course in as few kicks as possible. Although it was a very hot day, the children played fantastically and we even had some holes in one!
On Thursday, Micklem was lucky enough to receive a visit from Oliver Manoochehri, who plays for England's Deaf Football team. Oliver talked to us about his deafness as well as some of the tournaments he has played in, including the European Deaf Football Championships in Turkey last year. He also showed us a video of one of his goals which helped the England team secure a place at the Deaflympics in Japan later this year!
We got to ask him lots of questions about football and a few lucky children got to hold up some of his England shirts!
Oliver's message to us all was to keep trying different things, because one of them might turn into your passion, and to not let anything hold you back.
On Friday, all of KS2 got together and had the most amazing day at the Adventure Playground. There were countless activities to play and so many amazing opportunities for the children to enjoy themselves and celebrate what has been a fantastic Sports Week.
The children had access to a huge climbing frame, football astro-turf, trampoline, two giant tunnel slides, woodland to explore, swings and lots lots more. We then topped off the afternoon with a huge water pistol fight!
On Friday, EYFS and KS1 had a lovely morning exploring and developing their physical skills. They had the option to use lots of different sports equipment including javelin, basketball and football. They also had a construction station where they could play with huge hexagonal building equipment, triangles, squares and tyres. They finished the morning with a picnic in the sunshine.
At Forest School the children asked if they could make dens, and put up the hammock. This is a great way to practise their knots! They worked well together, being both resilient and resourceful! Great teamwork!
We also found a very interesting insect, we know to be a variant of ladybird.
On Wednesday, Year 6 finally got to meet their French pen friends! They were so excited, but also definitely a bit shy at first. They began the day by meeting in the hall, introducing themselves and enjoying some food and drink together. The children then took part in two sessions in a mixture of French and English. In the first session, they worked as teams with their pen-pals to create a contraption that would protect an egg from cracking when dropped from a height. The children did so well to share their ideas through drawings, gestures and some French as well.
In their second session, they created a collage in groups and had lots of opportunities to practise their language skills. Finally, we concluded the day with a French vs. English football match! The French teachers were so grateful for the day and have said that Micklem is more than welcome to visit Strasbourg next year.
Last week, the children took part in a whole school French Day. There were lots of different activities going on throughout the day. The children were able to visit a French cafe with a menu of croissants, crepes, pain au chocolat and pain grillé. They then had to use French vocabulary and phrases to ask for their food and drink. The children also took part in an Art activity where they painted 'en plein air' in the style of famous French artist Monet. Finally, the children learnt about Le Mime Marceau, the most famous French mime artist, and worked in groups in a mime guessing game.
On Wednesday, Year 4 and 5 went to the National Archives. Both classes took part in a workshop - Year 4's was called 'Treasures' and Year 5's was 'What is History?'. They had a fantastic time exploring all of the sources, artefact and evidence and developed their historical enquiry skills.
This year, we have introduced Class Dojo. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:
Be Kind. Show Respect. Aim High.
Children will be able to receive one or two points for these core values from any member of staff. We will keep an eye on which individuals, classes and house groups are being the kindest, most respectful and ambitious over the year.
