As we wrap up another great year at Micklem, we just want to say a big well done to all our amazing children, staff and families! You've worked hard, had fun, and made some brilliant memories along the way. From lessons and school trips to sports day and special events, there’s been so much to enjoy. A huge thank you to our fantastic staff and families for all your support. Have a lovely summer break – you’ve earned it!
This week at Micklem, there's been lots of celebration of the children's fantastic effort and progress throughout this school year.
In Reception, the children had a party to celebrate their many achievements and say goodbye to the lovely Reception staff. They played lots of different games and had party food. They also did some dancing and especially enjoyed 'Agadoo'.
In Year 1, the children spent the morning making shortbread and smoothies. They taste tested pineapple, mango, strawberries and banana and then used their fine motor skills to prepare the ingredients all by themselves. The children then blitzed it up and enjoyed their shortbread and smoothie in the afternoon.
In true Miss Mackie style, Year 2 celebrated the end of the year with a Disney Day. They flew to Disney World Florida, made their own wristbands and boarded and enjoyed rides in Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. They finished by meeting characters and watching the fireworks, all without leaving the classroom.
Year 4 celebrated the end of the year with a trip to forest school. Eliza used her super forest school skills to build and light the fire. The class then enjoyed marshmallows cooked on the open fire.
In Year 5, the children chose to celebrate the year and their successes with an afternoon of activity. They played dodgeball and benchball and then also used the gymnastics equipment including the ropes and apparatus. They had such a fun, and tiring (!) afternoon and had the chance to show their amazing sporting skills.
In the Sunshine Room, parents came in on Wednesday to visit and see all the amazing work their children have done this year. They also got a nice surprise! The children had been out the day before to the shops to get ingredients and then had made cookies as a treat for their families. It was also an opportunity to bid farewell to Miss Jolly as she heads off on a new adventure.
All classes have taken part in a forest school session with their new teacher. They had a fantastic time and took part in activities including the slack line, snail shell collecting and splat painting.
The Year 6s have had the most amazing week of celebrations to conclude their Micklem Primary School journey. On Wednesday, they had a huge water fight, completely soaking the adults as well of course, and then finished with a BBQ and ice lollies. On Thursday, they had their leavers disco, which they fundraised for throughout their enterprise week. Year 6 also chose to use some of their enterprise money to buy new outdoor benches for the field, complete with each of their handprints to decorate! Finally, on Friday morning, the children did their leavers assembly, which included a final catwalk, a very emotional speech from Mrs Walker and dancing and singing to NSYNC's 'Bye Bye Bye'.
On Monday, nursery and reception went to Whipsnade Zoo. Nursery had a lovely day exploring the farm and got the chance to get up close to lots of different farm animals. Reception explored the African animals and decided that their favourite was the giraffe. They also had the chance to see the parrots as part of the bird show.
In June, our Key Stage 2 Sunshine Room group were very lucky to be invited to St Albans Cathedral to watch and participate in Electric Umbrella’s ‘Shine a Light’ show. Our children danced, laughed and sang throughout the whole show. We are so lucky to be able to provide such amazing opportunities for our children.
Enjoy reliving the magic of the day with us in this video!
This year, we have introduced Class Dojo. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:
Be Kind. Show Respect. Aim High.
Children will be able to receive one or two points for these core values from any member of staff. We will keep an eye on which individuals, classes and house groups are being the kindest, most respectful and ambitious over the year.

Learning of the Week
Every week, we celebrate extraordinary learning that has taken place in classes. It may be that they have pushed passed an obstacle in their learning; worked on their presentation; thought about how to help others amongst other things.
Our Learning of the Week for the last fortnight goes to:
Reception
Hollie - Well done to Hollie for some fantastic phonics work this week. You are sounding out and blending brilliantly!
Thomas - Well done to Thomas for a brilliant morning in his new classroom yesterday.
Year 1
Ayla - Well done Ayla for doing some amazing maths work this week when looking at time to the hour. Ayla always has an amazing attitude towards any learning and gives everything her all.
Wyatt - For having a really brilliant morning in your new class this week.
Year 2
Harry G - Harry has been working hard in English and sharing his opinions on why hunting is bad, with good references to The Magic Finger and Fantastic Mr Fox books.
Mia - Mia has been working hard on her maths number bonds knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
Year 3
Jason - Jason was able to show great perseverance during Maths yesterday when Year 3 were learning about bar charts and how they work.
Charlie - Charlie’s effort and independence when writing this week has been amazing. He has got on with his work straight away and and really impressed all his adults with his positive attitude.
Year 4
Michal - Michal has shown great reflection skills over the last week. He has thought carefully about some of the choices he is making.
Alexis - Alexis has been thinking about our school rules this week and has tried hard to show respect and be kind.
Year 5
Precious - Following our History lesson about Victorian medicine, Precious completed some extra research and work at home all about Florence Nightingale. We love the enthusiasm for learning Precious!
Oliver - Oliver did a fantastic job as part of the props team for the Peter Pan production. He was organised, took the lead and was a massive help to a (slightly stressed) Ms Sentance behind the scenes!
Year 6
All of you - This is your last ever learner of the week assembly and I am so proud of you all for everything you have achieved this year. You are continuing to impress me with your mature attitude towards transition. Thank you for being you and for the best three years.
Well done to everyone who worked so hard this week, it is fantastic to see so many positive learning experiences!
