Welcome to your child's learning!

We are racing towards the summer holidays and have enjoyed weeks packed full of excitement and learning. We have celebrated Sport's Day. French Day, Young Enterprise Week and have gone to various sporting events!

It has been a busy couple of weeks and we are looking forward to so much more to come moving forward. I hope that everyone is enjoying the World Cup (even if the timings make that trickier) and that we are all ready to get behind the England team this week. I am aware that the England game is on late this week, and am expecting a few tired faces the next morning, but I am looking forward to discussing the game with you on Thursday.

If you would like to get more involved with the school and have further impact on your child's learning experiences, we are currently looking to appoint a parent governor. Please contact the office if you are interested.

Learning in Classrooms

Nursery

Nursery were immersed in our school French Day. They learnt new vocabulary when ordering from the French Cafe, making French flags, singing along to the french colour song and collaboratively working on our entry for the School Mona Lisa Competition.

Well done to all the children who participated in Nursery's Sports Day Races. We are so proud of you!

Reception

What a proud teacher I have been over the last couple of weeks in Reception. The children were fantastic at Sports Day and were very eager to try new foods in the French Cafe, on French Day! Reception - you are brilliant. We have enjoyed being outside, making pine cone bees, discovering insects, rolling tyres but not the thunder and lightning! We have been challenging ourselves to write sentences and have learnt a number bond song in Maths. Looking forward to next week and learning all about Africa...

Year 1

In Year 1 we finished off our learning about Brother Swan and wrote our own stories with a problem and a solution using our knowledge of first, then, now stories. In Maths we have been exploring place value within 100 by counting in tens and partitioning numbers into tens and ones. For Science we explored pond life and looked at life-cycles of animals and humans to link with our PSHE. We had great fun during Sports Day and enjoyed a picnic lunch! Outside we have a new water wall and have been learning how to use it. French Day was exciting starting with a French Cafe and a day of French activities including animal bingo, matching colours in French, shadow matching landmarks and finishing with a Mona Lisa exhibit. We love our Mona Lisa! We also worked hard for our special phonics and our teachers were so pleased with us, we were fantastic!

Year 2

In Year 2, we have had a very busy first two weeks back. We have started a new book 'The Magic Finger' we have written some instructions and made predictions on what we think will happen in the story.

In Maths we have been looking at statistics including tallychats and pictograms.

Sunshine Learning Community

The Sunshine Learning Community attended the Can Do Festival at Longdean Secondary School where they learnt to ride bikes, played netball games, develop their football skills and had a go at boxing.

Within class we have begun a research project to create a speech on a topic of our own choosing. In Maths, we have been exploring fractions.

A great start to the last half term of the academic year!

Year 3

It's been a busy first two weeks back in Year 3, with the children starting their new English book 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane' and continuing with their Maths unit 'shape'.

Year 3 attended their local Tennis Skills event at Leverstock Green Tennis Club on Thursday, and had a great time! It involved moving around completing different Tennis related activities. It was a great morning!

Year 4

Year 4 have had a wonderful 2 weeks back. They did a great job participating in all the sports last Friday.
Year 4 have started their new book- "Who let the Gods Out" and have been creating care guides for mythological creatures.
In Maths, they have been learning about adding and subtracting money.
Finally, they have also been eagerly preparing for the upcoming musical soiree- 30th June 6pm.

Year 5

Year 5 have worked hard over the last two weeks. We have completed our class book 'Kick' and produced some absolutely amazing 'hidden truth' advertisements for our own football boots. We have covered decimals and volume in maths and have started to look at inspiring scientists as part of our science lessons. We are now looking forward to starting our new book 'Stormbreaker' and continuing to develop our creativity. Please be reminded that Forest School will continue on a Wednesday and PE on a Friday- Please ensure appropriate clothing and PE kit (including trainers) is in school.

Year 6

The last couple of weeks have been filled with more writing, but the end is in sight! We have made time for some fun extra-curricular activities including: our very last sports day, French day and meeting our French penpals. We have written to our French pen-pals all year and after a couople of zoom calls we finally met them in person. It was such a great day with lots of Google translate, a science lesson, tasty snacks and ended with a football game! The next few weeks promise to be just as much fun as we enter the last stage of our primary school journey!

Experiences and Opportunities

Forest School

Year 5 had a go at making potions at Forest School.

We added water to the mix and found some worked better than others. The children were really keen to try and make their own potions using bicarbonate of soda, citric acid and powdered cornstarch, along with some natural ingredients from the forest. It's going to be great to see what happens!

Sports Day

Sport's Day was a resounding success! Children had a great time trying different activities and showed an in credibly supportive spirit when it came to the flat races. We were thrilled to see the level of engagement from our children and it was wonderful that so many of you could join us for the events and for lunch. We hope that you had as much fun as we did!

French Day

KS2 children explored Miro's unique style of art through drawing and imagination. They are in the process of creating dreamlike worlds full of movement. They will add colour very soon.

I am looking forward to seeing KS1 children again this week .

The National Gallery is looking for children's feedback on potential future Take One Pictures paintings and we will take part this week , how very exciting for us to share our thoughts with the gallery.

This year, we have introduced Class Dojo. A way of celebrating individuals and classes that are following our school rules of:

Maddox has tried his best this week with his handwriting and presentation of his work. Lots of adults have noticed and we are all very proud of you!
Ava was fantastic during our Maths lesson on Wednesday. She was able to identify parallel and perpendicular lines and draw her own.

Year 4

Darius has put in huge efforts with his Maths and English this week. It has been noticed by the adults in the room!
Despite Charlie not loving French, he had a wonderful French day and immersed himself in the day.

Year 5

Leo K has progressed so much with his writing in year 5 and his advitisement was amazing; he is definitely showing his 'aim high' attitude.
Maisie has shown more confidence in Maths this week and it has been lovely to see her aiming high and participating more.

Year 6

The whole of Year 6 for having an amazing Enterprise Week. Well done everyone!

Sunshine Learning Community

This week the whole of the Sunshine Learning Community achieved the learner of the week for their efforts at the CAN DO Festival on Tuesday. They all showed respect and aimed high throughout the festival - well done!

Well done to everyone who worked so hard this fortnight, it is fantastic to see so many positive learning experiences!

Each class has now chosen two school councillors to represent them on the School Council. These pupils will share their classmates’ ideas, help make decisions, and take part in projects to improve our school. We’re proud of everyone who put themselves forward and look forward to seeing the great work our new councillors will do this year!

Smoking and Vaping

We are grateful that you all respect not smoking or vaping on the school premises. However, as the school gates are an area where many children arrive and leave each day, we kindly ask that you also avoid smoking or vaping nearby so we can maintain a healthy and safe environment for all of our pupils.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us set a positive example for the children and keeping the school entrance welcoming for everyone.

Nut Allergies

I would like to remind all parents and carers that we are a NUT FREE school. This means that nuts should not be present or consumed on site. Please ensure that you do not send nuts or products that contain nuts into school with your child. This is for the safety and wellbeing of our children who suffer with nut allergies. It is incredibly important that this rule is followed at all times.

Toys and Fidgets

I would also like to remind parents and carers that children should not be bringing toys (including fidgets) from home into school. This is for a number of reasons, not least that your children get very upset if their toy gets misplaced or broken.

We will always facilitate fidgets where they will support a child's learning, but will go through proper procedures first.

Our Marvellous Men Gift Sale is taking place in school on Friday 19th June where children may purchase gifts for their loved ones. Gifts range in price from £1 to £6 and payment can be made in advance by going to Arbor-School Shop- Marvellous Men Gift Sale and then selecting the amount you wish your child to spend. Children are also permitted to bring cash in on the day.

Our Sponsored Summer Bounce is taking place on Friday 3rd July, where all children will take part to see how many bounces on a bouncy castle they can do in an allotted time. If you haven't already done so, please go to https://superkind.org/pta/micklem-primary-school-pta to set up your child's very own fundraising page. Alternatively, you can use the sponsor form that was sent home with your child and collect cash. If you require another form please ask at the school office. Please sponsor as much as you can as all proceeds will go towards new playground equipment for the children.

The PTA Summer Fayre is also taking place on Friday 3rd July, after school. There will be lot's of fun activities and games for all to enjoy, as well as a BBQ and refreshments. Tokens for the activities can be purchased in advance from Arbor-School shop. Tokens will also be available to purchase at the event by either cash or card.

SEND and Family Support

DSPL8's Summer 2026 Parents/Carers Newsletter is available to view on their new website here. It includes lots of information about FREE workshops, courses and events coming up in the summer term.

SEND Provision Consultation

The Hertfordshire SEND Local Area Partnership has developed a SEND Provision Plan 2026-29 which supports the delivery of the new SEND Strategy for 2026–2029. The strategy sets out their shared ambitions to improve outcomes for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

More children and young people in Hertfordshire are requiring additional support at school, many presenting with increasingly more complex needs than in the past. Families have consistently told them they want clearer pathways and better local options. In response, this Special Education, Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Provision Plan outlines how they will strengthen support in local schools, increase specialist provision where it is needed, and ensure every child receives the right help, in the right place, at the right time.

Feedback gathered so far has helped identify key priorities and has informed the five core elements of the draft SEND Provision Plan:

Strengthen capacity in mainstream schools
Expand specialist capacity in mainstream schools
Create more special school places
Update special school designations
Child centred placements

As part of the SEND Provision Consultation running from 23 March to 15 June 2026, they are seeking your views on whether the plan reflects your priorities, and how it can be further strengthened before it is finalised.

You can share your feedback by completing a short survey or by attending one of their consultation events. All details on how to get involved are available on the Local Offer: www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/SENDProvisionPlan

Thank you for your time, your views are important to them. All responses will be carefully considered and will directly influence the final SEND Provision Plan for 2026–2029.
