My name is Makayla Colon. I am a 17 year old artist from Baltimore. I am a senior at Bard High School Early College Baltimore. I originally was inspired to pursue art because of the wide range of artists that are in my family. I am a painter but I do a lot of mixed media work as well. Most of my work focuses on the portal of one's self. Throughout my experience in the art world, my art style has changed multiple times and I feel as though it will always be forever changing. Since being in ADCAP my art skills have developed immensely. I've taken a wide variety of courses such as Digital Illustration, Portrature with Light and Shadow, Color Theory, and many others. These courses and others have expanded my knowledge and skills in many different areas.
ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, I work to develop paintings that speak to my emotions, and to the emotions of characters that I am introduced to thought my life, that relates to me. Whether it be a fictional character from a book or a video game or a person who has had a significant influence on me. Part of my process is to just feel what I’m trying to portray as much as I can before I actually pick up a brush. I do not intend just to paint a weird looking picture that is mind-boggling and hard to comprehend, rather I am trying to portray a story of emotions in the rawest state of color and form as much as possible. I try with every work to recreate this scene of these heart-wrenching feelings that are in my mind when I’m reading books or poems or when I’m putting myself in someone else’s position. The challenge I always seem to face is to be able to clearly portray these tear-jerking emotions, without having to say anything at all.
