Through this project, I strengthened my critical thinking skill through the analysis of complex systemic global health and healthcare issues such as emergency department (ED) overcrowding and disparities in healthcare. I have developed this skill both through examining academic literature and through real world experiences I had working in in two different EDs in Dallas, Texas. I have learned to identify the root causes and connections between healthcare policies and practices while analyzing the potential for interventions.
This research focused specifically on the health disparities that Latino populations face when seeking healthcare. This project has deepened my understanding of these health disparities and the importance of cultural competence in healthcare. Continually, this exposure continues to reinforce my commitment to inclusive healthcare for all in my future professional fields.
This project has helped me affirm my interest in pursuing a career in healthcare and becoming a provider that is focused on addressing healthcare disparities. I have been challenged and grown professionally causing me to reflect on the value of equity, service, and humility that will guide my professional future.
