My research experience has helped me develop several key career readiness competencies identified by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). The following skills were the ones I utilized most for this research.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Through analyzing primary and secondary sources, identifying patterns, and drawing evidence-based conclusions, I’ve deepened my ability to think critically. Using atypical media as a primary source, namely music, was a unique learning experience. Research often involves navigating ambiguity, refining questions, and troubleshooting unexpected challenges, all of which have honed my analytical thinking.
Communication
Presenting my findings in writing and discussing them with peers and mentor has strengthened both my written and verbal communication skills. I've learned how to adapt complex ideas for different audiences, an essential skill in any professional setting.
Professionalism
Meeting deadlines, managing long-term projects, and responding to feedback with a growth mindset have all enhanced my sense of responsibility and initiative. Conducting independent research has taught me to take ownership of my work while remaining open to collaboration and constructive critique.
Equity & Inclusion
My research has increased my sensitivity to diverse perspectives and historical contexts. Engaging with materials from different cultures and time periods has helped me better understand the importance of inclusive thinking and respectful engagement with a variety of viewpoints.
