History
The Paper Physics Committee of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) was formed in autumn of 1963 within the TAPPI Research and Development Division. The first meeting took place in February 1964.
R. P. Whitney, of the Institute of Paper Chemistry, Appleton, Wisconsin and Chairman of TAPPI's Research and Development Division, made the original proposal for creating this committee. The proposal reflected the emergence of paper physics as a new discipline within paper science.
A paper physicist is a researcher who likes to tackle problems within the pulp and paper field that require a background in disciplines such as engineering mechanics, polymer physics, microscopy, physical chemistry, materials science, biophysics, solid state physics, and fluid mechanics.
