This work has shown the value of meta-analysis as it pertains to understanding valuable truths about linguistics research that remain prevalent across a variety of examples. Though it was noted that there was no single method that was promising for all of the examined works, the idea that context is vital to having more success in a research endeavor was reinforced. Achieving this goal includes looking at a linguistic inquiry through the lens of its specific history, juxtaposed to the broader history of its time, in conjunction with understanding the culture from which it originates. This is definitely easier said than done, especially in cases like the Voynich Manuscript in which very little is known about its definitive origins, but is sure to yield more meaningful results than undervaluing the role of context.
This conclusion highlights the importance of well-rounded inquiries that are sensitive to the true goals of language in the world: connectivity and understanding.
This study reveals just how diverse and maturing the field of linguistic mystery decipherment is. Though it exists as a subfield of linguistics, it remains incredibly broad and the focus of many scholar’s works. In addition to this, the takeaways gleaned from the range of studies conducted on linguistic mysteries strengthen the idea of cultural and historical context being intimately tied to language. Though there is much to be said for the role of technology in new research across all disciplines, the retention of an emphasis on the humanities aspects of a study must always also be recognized.
