This undertaking was spurred on as a cross-organization project aimed to alleviate a major problem: inaccessibility of and biases within georeferenced databases.
Databases suffer from temporal, spatial, and taxonomic biases:
Common species may not be collected because a museum has a lot of them
iNaturalist points are congregated around cities and parks
Highly studied areas appear to have more mussels in them when really there are just more records
This application seeks to be a user-friendly interactive experience that individuals from all walks of life can use-- from high school students to field experts.
