Interning at the Talbert House gave me real-world experience in the field of global health. I was able to witness health inequities, which I have the goal of tackling in my future career. This internship allowed me to network with a wide array of professionals, including those in law and medicine. I had responsibilities and completed projects, which have developed my skill set applicable to my future career. Both the internship and my personal research project, inspired by my internship, were incredible opportunities for me to expand my education, skill set, and embrace self-development.
This project focused on researching a specific health inequity in the United States, which required me to immerse myself in an environment with individuals of different backgrounds. During this process, I identified resources that are available to some populations, but not all. I found that older adults do not have an equitable amount of resources to help them manage their medications. My research ultimately identified possible solutions to create more equitable practices in the future.
During my internship, it was crucial that I acted with professionalism as I was constantly networking with other professionals or completing public health work in a community setting. I was representing both my own personal brand, Miami's brand as a student, and Talbert House's brand as an intern. I acted with accountability, integrity, respect, and dedication each day. I had to consistently meet the expectations of my managers and show my dedication to the community through compassion and awareness.
