This research project required the use of SAS coding software. SAS Programming was completely new to both researchers, and they learned how to use the software to research their niche question in just a few weeks. Being familiar with SAS coding is a powerful professional skill that advances their technological skill set. Additionally, hands-on experience with the research process—from developing a research question to data management, analysis, writing a manuscript-style capstone paper, and dissemination—was incredibly valuable to us, as it not only deepened our understanding of the subject matter but also built critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that are essential for academic and professional success.
This research project enhanced both researchers' strengths, applicable to future research opportunities. Through investigating an issue of public health, both researchers sought opportunities to learn information and skills applicable to their future careers. They furthered their education in a meaningful, professional, and inspiring way.
The researchers collaborated for the entire project, which required constant communication and respect. Since both researchers had a similar goal of gaining research experience applicable to their future careers, collaboration was easier. Each researcher used their strengths to improve and expand the research project. The researchers' skills complemented one another.
