Asexuality is defined as experiencing little to no feelings of sexual attraction (AVEN, 2024)
Approximately 1% of the population identifies as asexual (Bogaert, 2004)
Anti-asexual bias and misunderstanding of the identity are common in the general population (Zivony & Reggev, 2023)
Sexual minorities are a health disparity population (NIH, 2013)
Asexual individuals report more depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, stress, and lower self-esteem than their heterosexual counterparts (Simon et al., 2022)
Sexual minorities with ample social support report less suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, drug abuse, and shame (McDonald, 2018)
But - less work has examined this in asexual populations specifically...
Q1: How do asexual individuals describe their well-being?
Q2: What is the structure of the social network of asexual individuals in terms of the number of close others, relationship types (e.g. family, friends), and how does this affect their well-being?
Q3: How do close others support or invalidate asexual individuals, and how does this affect their well-being?
H1: Having more close relationships with individuals who are aware and validating of the asexual individual's identity will increase well-being.
