Eco-cell, founded in 2003, is a family-based company in Louisville, Kentucky. Eco-cell collaborates with over 50 zoos in the United States and Canada to minimize electronic waste. Eco-cell containers collect recycled electronics (cell phones, ipads, ipods, handheld gaming units, Kindles, etc.) which are then shipped to the factory. Eco-cell pays for the shipping costs of the recycled electronics. Eco-cell either re-uses, resells or recycles the electronics. Monies from the resell of the donated electronics go to non-for-profits to help ensure the survivability of the gorillas. Eric Ronay, of Eco-cell, is assisting in the protection and conservation of the gorillas by encouraging culture change.
