He was a bishop and a doctor for people and animals. To avoid being caught, he lived in a cave outside of the city. Legend has it that sick animals would come to him to be cured. But if St. Blaise was praying, the animals would patiently wait so as not to disturb his prayers. On his feast day, some people go to church to have their throats blessed. What Is All Souls' Day and How to Celebrate It

Coming quickly on the heels of All Saints' Day is another wonderful feast of the Church: All Souls' Day celebrated on November 2nd.

On All Souls' Day, the Church celebrates the souls of the faithful departed. It is a day of prayer and remembrance, and one when we pray especially for the souls in purgatory. Purgatory, coming from the Latin word “to purge”, is where souls who die in a state of grace, but who aren’t quite ready for Heaven due to the consequences of sin, go. Unlike Hell, Purgatory is a temporary state. You stay there until you have reached the holiness necessary to enter Heaven. But, the souls in Purgatory cannot pray for themselves, they rely on us here on earth to pray for them.

Dear God,

Today we remember our relatives and friends who have died. We miss them dearly and wish that they were here with us. Help us to get through our sorrow. Our grieving is a sign of our love for them. We know that we were blessed with these people in our lives, and that they continue to live on in us.

God, may we be comforted today in knowing that our loved ones are at peace, in your embrace, and that one day we will see them again.

Amen.
