The Mitchell County Schools Academically and Intellectually Gifted Program, commonly referred to as AIG, provides students who exhibit high-performance capabilities in intellectual disciplines an opportunity to be challenged and successful. Mitchell County Schools provides a range of educational opportunities to meet the needs of each AIG student. Our program is committed to planning and maintaining a program for advanced learners within our system that is flexible enough to respond to the changing goals of education and prepares our students to become lifelong learners, able to compete in our rapidly changing world.
Mitchell County Schools has developed their local AIG plan based on the NC AIG Program Standards (as adopted by the State Board of Education, July 2009, and revised into SBE Policy December 2012). These Standards serve as a statewide framework and guide local school districts to develop, coordinate and implement thoughtful and comprehensive AIG programs. The NC AIG Program Standards encompass six principle standards with accompanying practices. These standards articulate the expectations for quality, comprehensive, and effective local AIG programs and relate to the categories suggested by NC's AIG legislation, Article 9B (N. C. G. S. 115C-150.5). These best practices help clarify each standard, describe what an LEA should have in place, and guide LEAs to monitor and improve their programs. As part of continual program evaluation, the Mitchell County Schools AIG Program participated in a self-assessment process, which involved multiple stakeholders. The data gathered during this process guided our program in developing the local AIG plan for 2022-2025. Our local AIG plan has been approved by the Mitchell County Board of Education and submitted to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
