Case Study
BTPN's Digital Transformation through Jenius
Bank BTPN launched Jenius in 2016 to cater to the needs of millennials for practical and innovative digital banking services. Developed over 18 months with an investment of IDR 500 billion, Jenius had attracted more than 3.7 million users across 514 cities and regencies in Indonesia by 2021.
Payment
Jenius introduced several user-friendly features to simplify everyday transactions, such as:
$Cashtag: Lets users send and receive money using a personalized username instead of a bank account number.
Send It: Enables fast and easy money transfers to bank accounts, mobile numbers, or emails.
Pay Me: Allows users to request money directly from others within the app.

Settlement
Jenius integrates with Indonesia’s national banking system and global payment networks via its Visa debit card. This allows for secure and efficient transaction settlement both domestically and internationally. Additionally, features like Dream Saver help users automate their savings towards financial goals.
Value Creation
Jenius uses a co-creation model, involving over 45,000 co-creators (users) in its product development. Through the Jenius Co.Create community, users contribute feedback that directly influences new features like:
Moneytory: A tool to monitor spending and income.
Split Pay: A feature that converts purchases into installments.
A study using CAMELS indicators showed that Jenius did not significantly improve BTPN’s financial metrics like Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Return on Equity (ROE), Loan to Deposit Ratio (LDR), or Risk-Weighted Assets. However, it did significantly impact Non-Performing Loans (NPL) and Operating Expenses to Operating Income (BOPO), indicating improved operational efficiency and risk management.
Jenius successfully transformed traditional banking into a digital-first service with a strong focus on user convenience, transaction efficiency, and innovation. While it has not yet produced a major financial uplift for BTPN, it has created long-term value through user engagement, digital features, and co-creation strategies tailored to modern customer needs.
