Bridging Text and Context

“Robert Frost was born in California but grew in Massachusetts, part of the region in the northeastern USA known as New England. After he finished school he took on all kinds of jobs but he always knew he wanted to be a poet. Although he spent two years at Harvard University, he left his studies and became a farmer to support his family. Alongside his farming activities he also wrote poetry and taught at various schools, colleges and universities throughout his career. In his poetry he often used the rural settings he lived in to present his social philosophical ideas.”

Answer these questions on your page:

1. From what you know about Frost's life, how do you think the road that the poet, himself, took "made all the difference"?

2. How does this information affect your understanding of the poem?

Now, using this information, write a paragraph of 80 - 100 words

Write the new information, in your own words.

Explain how this information is connected to the poem.

Include details from the biographical information in your OWN words, and from the poem. (Check Wikipedia to see which years Frost lived, and consider what MOST people did in those days).

How does this help you understand the poem better? What new understandings about the poem, does it give you?

HOTS: Making Connections

Strings

* Each person gets 1 string.

* You have to hold one end of the string and give the other end to another person who has something in common with you.

* You cannot give a string to the same person you got it from.

* You cannot give and receive both strings for the same reason.

* EVERYONE MUST BE CONNECTED IN THE END.

* Do NOT let go of the strings!

Walk a Mile in His Shoes : Exploring the woods

Robert Frost wrote a poem about walking in the woods. In this activity, you are going to experience what he did.

1) Work in pairs

2) ONE of you must download and install the YouTube app AND Google Cardboard app on your phone.

The other should put together the Google Cardboard.

When you have installed it, and opened the first clip, click on the Cardboard icon

3) EACH of you will have to answer the questions yourself (one looks, the other writes, and then switch).

4) Watch at least two videos in the playlist.

Questions:

For each video, describe what you see: What is the weather? What can you hear? Describe what you see in front of you, behind you, on the ground and in the sky.

What is the limit of the views? What are the farthest things you can see?

What do you think there is beyond these limits? Explain.

Imagine that you are alone in one of the woods from the video. How do you decide where to go?

If you choose the wrong way to your destination, would it be easy to come to the same place and choose another way? Explain.
