The Morris Hills Regional District is pleased to offer various opportunities for in-person learning and enrichment in preparation for the 2023-2024 school year. Please read each description carefully and sign up for the program(s) that may be of interest. These programs are open to all Morris Hills Regional District students, including incoming freshmen, School Choice students, and MSE or APA students. Transportation will be available to MHRD students who reside in any one of our four sending districts (Denville, Rockaway Borough, Rockaway Township, or Wharton). Programs are grant-funded and will be provided at no cost to families. All enrichment programs will be held in air-conditioned classrooms at Morris Knolls High School. Masks will be optional. Applications are due by June 9th. Late applications will be accepted on a space-available basis, but transportation will not be available for late applicants.
July 31- August 4, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
This in-person course will prepare students for the challenges of tackling a fast-paced honors-level course. Students will apply creativity in problem-solving and persistence while reinforcing previously learned skills that are essential to success in Algebra 2 Honors. This course is recommended for any student taking Algebra 2 Honors in the fall, including Magnet and IB students.
This workshop, open to students in all grade levels, focuses on building the necessary skills allowing students to gain more confidence in speaking publicly, presenting powerful presentations, and engaging in daily classroom dialogue. Students will acquire a sense of confidence through ice-breakers and impromptu activities while focusing on building the foundations of public speaking in order to ace classroom presentations, work efficiently in a group setting, and communicate with teachers and peers effectively. The goal is to help students develop an awareness of their own self-presentation as well as foster a level of comfort with speaking in public.
Students participating in the Summer Reading Book Club will work toward reading this year's selection and fulfilling the assignment as part of the District Summer Reading Program. Simultaneously, students will learn some cross-curricular literacy skills and reading strategies that improve fluency and comprehension while building essential study skills that will be most beneficial to students entering high school. Students have the potential to leave the course having fulfilled their summer reading requirement for September 2023. Students enrolled will receive a complimentary copy of this year's district-read book.
July 10-14, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Focused on the theme of human rights, students will examine and explore local, national, and international documents to enhance reading comprehension and analysis skills connected to historical thinking. Students will have the opportunity to analyze sources and evidence, make historical connections, build chronological reasoning skills, and foster historical argumentation around an aspect of the struggle for human rights. Enroll in Becoming a Scholar of Social Studies today! Historical thinking skills learned in this workshop will be transferable to all classes within the MHRD Social Studies Department.
July 10-14, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
This week-long program is designed for students who are new to the kitchen and have not yet taken a Culinary or Food/Nutrition class at the Morris Hills Regional District. Rising freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to sign up for this program to experience the possibilities that are available in our Culinary program. The workshop will focus on building foundational culinary skills in a hands-on, in-the-kitchen environment. No prior experience is required.
July 24-28, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
This program will serve as an introduction to the Morris Hills Regional Aviation Program. Over the course of the week-long program, participants will explore both manned and unmanned aircraft systems. All participants will have the opportunity to utilize flight simulators to master taxiing to the runway, straight and level flight, ascending and descending, taking off, the basics of flying, turning, approaches, and landing. Additionally, unmanned aircraft systems will explore the basics of flying drones, including making a video, search and rescue missions, and an obstacle course competition. No prior flight or drone experience is required.
July 24-28, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Over the span of a week, students will begin to learn the basics of CAD software to develop designs that they can laser cut and 3D print. This will be accomplished through the use of Onshape software which is capable of developing 2D and 3D designs that can be utilized by the equipment we have. By the end of the week, students will have a take-home product that they designed and prototyped. This program is designed for students who have not yet completed a class in the CAD/Architecture/Engineering sequence.
August 14-18, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
This summer program will serve as an opportunity for students with little to no string performance experience to build basic skills and knowledge prior to enrolling in the String Ensemble course. Students without previous experience will have a choice of learning the violin, viola, cello or bass. Students enrolled in this course will be able to confidently participate in their first String Ensemble class with the necessary skills and basic music competency to succeed in the full-year String Ensemble course
