FAQ

What is MICL

The Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League was organized in 2017 to provide a fun, safe and high quality mountain biking program for students in grades 6 to 12. With the cooperation of our partners and our sponsors, we are able to provide high quality experiential education through mountain biking. Regardless of ability level, the Maryland League is committed to providing a positive experience for all student-athletes in accordance with NICA’s Five Core Principles: Fun, Inclusivity, Equity, Respect, and Community.

Maryland League Mission Statement:

To enable every Maryland teen to develop a strong mind, a strong body and strong character through lifelong participation in cycling.

Where does the team meet?

The Mount Hebron Cycling Cub has weekly skills training sessions at Mount Hebron High School in the Lower field.  We also do trail rides at local trails such as Patapsco State Park and Rockburn Branch and other trails appropriate for rider skill levels. Refer to our Events page for further details.

When does the season start?

Pre-season runs from April to June and consists of 6 gatherings.  Regular season starts on July and runs through October.   July and August consists of weekly practices and team rides.   September through November we will have team practices and 5 MICL Activities including races.  For detail on the schedule please see the Events Page.

(How or ) Can I try it out?

Bring your bike to practice and give it a try.  Riders are welcome to sign a waiver and join us for one practice before registering.  Please fill out the NICA Waiver, and bring it with you when you join us for practice.  If you use the NICA electronic waiver form, please email it to info@mhhs.bike

How safe is mountain biking?

The safety of student-athletes is a number-one priority.  We teach students the skills needed to ride safely including how to wear safety gear, proper bike handling, and equipment maintenance.  All sports come with some inherent risk, but cycling is often much safer than other high contact sports. Coaches receive first aid training, and medical professionals assist at races in the unlikely event of an emergency.

What are the benefits of cycling?

What should I bring to practice?

This is a list of what should be in your bike bag. If you are unsure about where to get these items please email us and we will get back to you.

How do I sign up?

Student Athletes can go to the Registration for Student Athlete page.

How much does it cost to ride?

Since we are a part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association and the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League each rider will have to register with them. MICL registration requires the ------ NICA fee and the ----- MD league fee.

This ------ covers the season and includes all events, which are optional and not required.

When somebody signs up for a season, they can check the boxes to register for the events they expect to attend, which helps the league know numbers for attendance and who is coming, but they are all included with the fee. None of the events are mandatory.

The season is 90% practices and rides with the team, so the participation fee doesn’t change based on number of races attended. An analogy is if someone signs up for a season of rec soccer, but they can’t make all the games, that doesn’t affect the fee.  Remember, this money pays for the insurance and all of the operating costs of the program.

How can I reach out?
