Musical Fun in 2019
We have hit the ground running this new year! Third graders are starting their ukulele unit right now. In the next few weeks, we will learn how to hold the instrument, strumming versus picking, and our first chords. Keep a lookout on class dojo over the next few weeks to see us playing along with our first song!
Second graders are continuing to explore their voice as an instrument, and how different parts of our bodies affect our voice. This is in preparation for our Second Grade concert, which is now part of our spring fling! We will be sending more information home towards the end of the month as details are finalized.
Kindergarten and First Grade students are building on what we learned about pitch to learn about melodies - the part of a song that gets stuck in your head - and melodic direction.
As we move into the 3rd quarter, Kindergarten and First Grade will be learning about instrument families and dynamics (volume in music), while Second and Third Graders will be continuing with their special projects.
First Quarter Down, and Plenty of Fun Still to Come!
Where did 2018 go?! Our Park View Musicians have been doing great things in the music room. Third graders enjoyed rhythm centers and creating anchor charts that second graders will use later in the year. First and Second graders are exploring their voice as an instrument, and how different parts of our bodies affect our voice. Kindergarten students are experimenting with high and low sounds, called pitch, while learning songs for their Kindergarten Christmas Program! Kindergarten Families - your classroom teachers should be communicating with you about this program on December 14th.
As we move through the 2nd quarter of the school year, we will be learning about classical composers (like Pytor Tchaikovsky, who wrote The Nutcracker ballet), melody - or the part of a song that gets stuck in our heads, and possibly dynamics, or volume in music!
Welcome back for the 2018-2019 School Year!
What a fantastic start to the school year! Our PV Musicians have hit the ground running. Our classes will be exploring steady beat and tempo - the speed of the beat - for our first few visits to music!
Kindergarten friends will be moving and playing body percussion to the beat of different songs. First and Second graders will learn how strong and weak beats are organized into groups called measures, and how that affects the way music feels. Third Graders will learn what a meter sign is, and all about OSTINATOS!
April showers bring May Flowers?
We certainly hope they do! Due to the rain, we are postponing this evening's concert, as well as the spring fling festivities, until next Monday, April 30th at 6:00pm! Families are still encouraged to come this evening to check out the book fair. The book fair will be open until 7:00pm tonight, and tomorrow, April 24th will be the LAST DAY for shopping!
We apologize for any inconvenience the reschedule causes, and hope you'll join us and share in the product of our students hard work!
Instrument Fun!
We're learning all about instruments right now in the music room. Kindergarten friends are learning about instrument families and how they work together in an orchestra.
First graders will be learning how to play basic written rhythms on different percussion instruments - including rhythms that they will write!!
Second graders will be learning instrumental parts for some of their concert songs - some may be the accompaniment for our concert!
Third graders will be learning about the Ukulele and the basics of how to play one! Ukulele's are fantastic instruments for our students - not only do they have a unique and pleasant sound, but their size fits much better with small, growing hands. Ukulele's are also one of the more affordable string instruments!

It's that time of year again!!!
Hopefully, all of our second grade families received their letters by now, announcing our annual 2nd Grade Spring Concert! Mark your calendars - Monday, April 23rd, at 6:00pm! This is also the Family Night of the book fair, and the Art Show - showcasing our students wonderful artwork!
This year, our theme is "Folk Songs from Home". All of the songs performed at the concert are folk tunes from somewhere around the US. Students will have the opportunity to earn special roles in the concert - speakers, instrumentalists, and demonstrators - and more information will come about that as we get closer to the concert.
We hope you'll join us and share in the product of our students hard work!
Happy New Year!
Hopefully everyone had a restful and fun break, while enjoying time with family and friends over the holidays! Now its back to school, and we have loads of great stuff planned in music!
Second grade students will be learning about performance etiquette - the difference between singing along to our favorite song on the radio, and singing in front of an audience. This is in preparation for our annual Second Grade Concert! Our concert will be on April 23rd - as well as family night for the Spring Book fair! Second grade parents - more info will come home with your student later this month.
Kindergarten and First grade friends will be learning about Melody - kind of like the musical main idea of a song. Some people describe it as the catchy bit of a tune that gets stuck in your head.
Third Graders will be exploring Dynamics - the volume we play or sing - and how it affects the music. Ask your students if they remember the difference between Forte and Piano. HINT - its not the instrument!
Merry Music Making!

Excitement from NCMEA!!!!
I was fortunate enough to attend our annual Music Educator's In-Service conference this past weekend - and it was AMAZING! NC's Music Educator's Association brought in some wonderful speakers and clinicians, and a couple of our MGSD teachers hosted sessions as well. I gained so much knowledge and I can't to share with our students at PVES.
Although, the students may be more excited to learn that I had the chance to meet our favorite musical friend QUAVER! He was so kind, he offered to do a video shout out for everyone at PV - check it out :
One Quarter Down!!!
The first quarter of the 2017-2018 school year has come and gone, and our young musicians have learned so much! Everyone learned just a bit about improvisation - or creating music on the spot! Students have learned to use their knowledge of steady beat and rhythm to improvise word and rhythmic patterns to go with a musical accompaniment.
During November, Kindergarten will learn more about pitch, or high and low sounds. First and Second graders will explore how their voice is an instrument, how to take care of it, and different ways we use it in music. Third graders will start learning about the Classical Period in music history - be ready to hear all about Beethoven and Mozart!
There's so much to hear, and even more to play! Ask your students to improvise something for you!
Great start to another school year!
What a fantastic start to the school year! Our PV Musicians are currently learning about and reviewing concepts with Beat - The heartbeat of music!
Kindergarten friends are moving and starting to play body percussion to the beat of different songs. First and Second graders are learning how strong and weak beats organize groups into measures, and how that affects the way the music feels. Third Graders learned what a meter sign is, as well as OSTINATOS - a short repeated pattern in music. They also improvised their own ostinatos that they played with their whole class!
Moving forward, students will be learning about voices and voice choice in Kindergarten, Meter in first and second grade, and some fun singing concepts in third grade. Third grade families - if they haven't already, ask them to sing part of "Hey, Mr. Beat Boy" from this past week. They loved it!
