Interactive read-alouds are the foundation of a literacy rich classroom. Typically, interactive read-alouds are completed in a whole group/mini lesson environment. The text is selected by the classroom teacher and is either on grade level or above grade level. Since students do not have to visually process the text, decode or attend to punctuation, they have the opportunity to give their full attention to engaging in texts. This allows for critical instructional skills such as inferring, predicting, rich discussion and oral comprehension. Every individual involved in an interactive read-aloud develops a fuller understanding while benefitting from the interpretations of others.
