Monona Grove School District is one of the newest host sites for Farm to School programming through AmeriCorps and the Department of Public Instruction.
The AmeriCorps Farm to School Program seeks to build healthy communities by:
improving child nutrition through educational F2S activities for students and families. These activities encourage healthy eating choices within an educational setting;
developing strong communities by creating future community leaders and connecting schools with local farmers and food businesses; and
increasing the capacity of communities all over Wisconsin to support sustainable F2S programs that encourage healthy behaviors and improve the school food environment.
Some of the Farm to School activities we may be involved in:
Nutrition Education lessons and activities in class/outside
Menuing local foods in our school meal programs
Farmer engagements in the classroom
Local food taste tests
Maintaining/building school gardens
Community events and volunteer opportunities
Farm to School newsletters
The goal of the program is to engage our whole district including the students, their families, school staff, local farmers, local business owners, and community members.
Be on the lookout for more information in the next newsletter, Farm to School take home activities, and community events! If you have any questions please email the Farm to School Specialist.
