Dr. Jim Finch Receives Prestigious PBIS Award

Mary Persons High School Principal Dr. Jim Finch has been selected as the national award winner for the prestigious Association for Positive Behavior Supports (APBS) "Ted Carr Award." Dr. Finch was nominated by the Georgia PBIS team for the tremendous work he has done over the years as an exceptional high school principal implementing and sustaining PBIS in an outstanding high school. His generosity in opening his doors to others to come look and learn over the past ten years has been unsurpassed in Georgia PBIS work. Mary Persons High School was recently the spotlight school in the Mid Atlantic PBIS High School Newsletter which is seen all around the world. Georgia PBIS Team member Dr. Mimi Gudenrath stated, "Jim did an amazing job in the interview for the article and the student video. We are especially proud of Jim as he is the first person from Georgia to ever receive this award." Dr. Finch is the first Georgian to receive this honor.

The Ted Carr Award is presented each year at the International APBS Conference, this year in Washington DC, February 20-23.

Edward G. "Ted" Carr was a teacher, researcher and pioneer in the field of positive behavior support. His early career work focused on examining the environmental origins of self-injurious behavior in children with autism. This early work laid the foundation for subsequent research on functional communication training and, ultimately, to conceptual and procedural foundations of positive behavior support. He spent over 30 years as professor of psychology at Stony Brook University, where he directed research and training activities in positive behavior support and autism in collaboration with students and colleagues across the country.

Ted was one of the key founders of positive behavior support. His contributions to the definition and the vision of positive behavior support were unmatched. He was an inspiring advocate who argued with tenacity for an infrastructure that would provide for a sustainable and dynamic foundation for the emerging discipline. As such, his was the foremost and most compelling voice that led to the creation of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, and his vision, persistence and persuasiveness led also to the establishment of the Association for Positive Behavior Support. As the organization's first president, Ted was instrumental in helping the organization become a major force in disseminating values-based, scientific practices for people with challenging behaviors.

Dr. Finch will be recognized for this award at the keynote address in Washington, DC at the February conference, and he has been asked to present at the conference. "As the state technical assistant who has had the real pleasure to support the Monroe County school district since it's early inception of PBIS, I will look forward to being on the front row when he receives this award," stated Dr. Gudenrath.
