We had discussion with Prof. Rajesh (MSME@IITH) on future work on Nitrided Fe-7Al alloys & tungsten containing microalloyed steels. Specifically,
1. Fatigue testing to take advantage of the compressive stress induced by the nitride layer.
2. Nanoindentation of the nitrided specimens.
3. Making the alloy without tungsten but with the microalloying elements so that we can determine the advantage of tungsten alloying.
4. Apply AI/ML tools to the data on light weight steels from Dr. Khaple & arrive at a composition that has the best combination of mechanical properties. This composition will be cast/rolled & tested for validation.
Visit at MSME@IITH
Prof. Phaniraj & Dr Shiv Kumar Khaple, Sc. F, Advanced Melting Technology Group at DMRL visited MSME Dept. @IIT Hyderabad on 23rd Dec 2025 for technical discussions.
We had discussions with Dr. Ramesh from the Sustainable Metallurgy & Industrial Technology (SMITH) research lab. The discussion revolved around several facilities including Induction Melting, Arc Melting, Muffle furnaces & the tube furnace that is used for treatments in specific atmosphere.
1. Induction melting of Fe-7Al with dispersion of TiB2 particles The weight of the melt & whether it would be sufficient for the work to be carried out.
2. Nitriding of Fe-7Al alloys. The process of nitriding & the quantitative analysis following Nitriding. The sample holder, the sample size & number of samples. The microstructure of cross-section, case depth & microhardness analysis.
