The CS Pathways RPP
CS Pathways is a researcher-practitioner partnership (RPP). Its overarching goal is to establish and institutionalize equitable, high-quality CS instruction in its partner district middle schools. Specifically and currently, CS Pathways partners pursue this goal by integrating a mobile app development curriculum in partner districts' classrooms.
As RPP members, CS Pathways partners develop practices that help school teachers and administrators to use research and research approaches to improve computer science teaching and learning in middle schools.
CS Pathways uses a culturally responsive approach to teaching computer science in which students develop apps that serve their self-identified communities, connecting computer science to their lived experiences. Teachers and students work together to identify students' communities of interest and ways that mobile apps might serve them. Teachers and students use Code.org's App Lab and freely available instructional materials from Code.org and other sources to develop students coding skills and create apps that inform, study, connect, and advocate for their communities.
Purpose
To teach foundational CS skills to students who would not otherwise learn them;
To increase and broaden the population of students who can study and work in areas using computer science;
To establish and institutionalize CS instruction in partner middle schools.
