We use coconut husks as "soil" for the plants to grow. Here we are planting 200 seeds per tray. That's a lot of plants!
During the first week, the plants must be watered once. During the second, they are soaked once every 8 hours.
This is the growth of our lettuce after one week! More to go!
We finally finished installing all of the saturation strips! Saturation strips are pieces of fabric that go in between the grow medium (foam). When water drips down from the top, it will be absorbed down the saturation strips and concentrated to optimize plant growth. Any excess water will drip down and be recollected and recycled back into the system.
These are called saturation strips, before we were able to install them in the farm, we needed to soak and dry them. This allowed us to get rid of a chemical that would otherwise prevent the strips from absorbing water.
Today is the day that we started building. We completed one wall and are looking to finish the second tomorrow!
The freight farm has arrived! We're excited to start working and getting the farm up and running!
Thanks to the generous people at Penn State, we have received our first shipment of seeds! We are excited for the delivery of the farm this saturday, 9/25/21!
Methacton High School has started to bring awareness to sustainable farming, beginning with a hydroponic freight farm. Three dedicated teachers, Mr. Walton, Mr. Savitz, and Mrs. Murray along with six other selected students are on the team to tackle this project. The beginning of this freight farm journey began with a pump and a slab of concrete as seen pictured to the left.
