As you read the book you selected, ask yourself why this book is beneficial for a high school student to read. What does it show you about your world? Your own life? Does it illuminate the importance of certain qualities, actions, or institutions?

Purpose Statement: William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, published in 1954, is a dystopian novel about a group of school- age boys who end up marooned on a tropical island. After reading, be prepared to write about what the novel’s outcome may say about Golding’s views of humanity following WWII.
