Independent Reading Program (IRP) : All students are responsible for completing independent reading each marking period. Students may pick any book of their choice from the Arcola library, my classroom library, or a book they have from home. All IRP books must be given teacher approval.
All students will be given an individual IRP point total based upon their reading level S.T.A.R.
Each IRP book a student decides to read is assigned a certain number of points called Accelerated Reading points (AR points). Just google AR Bookfinder and enter your book title and author. If the book is in the database, the book will be assigned a certain number of AR points. If it is not in the database, then the student must show me the book and I will assign a point total for the book. Each student will read the required number of books needed to get to their personal AR point total.
Bear in mind that IRP is a large part of the reading grade each marking period. It is worth 10% of each marking period grade. IRP progress will be monitored throughout the marking period because each Wednesday students will be given a writing prompt and write a paragraph regarding the IRP book they are reading. My advice is to manage your time, stay on top of it, and read 15 minutes each night!
