Metcalf's Outdoor Education Program was started by PE teacher Mel Thake and Math teacher Terry Oberhardt during the 1979-1980 School Year. As outdoorsmen, the two teachers noted how not all students had the chance to experience and explore in the outdoors, and how all students deserved that opportunity to have that real world exploration opportunity.
As a result of their hard work and commitment to the outdoors, Mr. Thake and Mr. Oberhardt built a resilient and reflective program centered on the belief that the outdoors are place of learning and exploration.
Those first few years saw just seventh and eighth graders truly "roughing it" with camping occurring under tarps, and tents, with all cooking occurring over campfires - deep in private woods north of Lake Bloomington. As time has passed, the program as evolved to include a cabin-based experience for fifth and sixth graders and a more "civilized" program for seventh and eighth graders.
Our current program teams are immensely grateful to Mr. Thake and Mr. Oberhardt for their vision, determination, and hard work!Â
