You never know how lessons taught in the classroom translate to a student’s personal life, but every so often an educator receives a message making all the hard work worth it. At Metcalf School, we had one of those moments this week.
For the last two years, students and teachers at Thomas Metcalf Laboratory School have focused on Learner Qualities. Our students are taught to be engaged learners that can get themselves out of “the pit” when they:
Empowering our students with Learner Qualities has built a growth mindset among our students. They have the tools necessary to dig themselves out of "the pit" when they haven’t mastered a skill or standard. These Learner Qualities allow our students to embrace the “power of YET.”
Thomas Metcalf School was proud to send four middle school golfers to the IESA State Golf Tournament last week. It was a great day of golf, but it was the email that followed the tournament that made our smiles just a little brighter.
Dear Mrs. B,
THANK YOU so much for the opportunity to participate! Once again, N had a blast. She smiled from hole 1 to 18! She had some bad shots, and overcame them using grit. We know with this experience she will use all the 7 Learner Qualities to improve her game. This was such a great learning experience for her! She found her weakness- putting!
…She did great and represented Metcalf with class and grace:) She walked off with a smile and said “the power of YET!” We love it!!!!!!!! Thank you, again, from the bottom of our hearts for letting her play! It was a joy to watch! We can’t wait to see what another year of golf brings this girl! … Thank you!!!!
Love,
The O Family
Students applying Learner Qualities to their lives outside of school and families enthusiastically embracing Learner Qualities is something we dreamt of two years ago. We hope that the Metcalf Mindset will continue to serve our students well in the future.
At Metcalf we embrace challenges and believe in the power of yet!
