went to Germany 1866-1867 to conduct several works

music curriculum served as model for others

performances were said to "elevate American life"

wrote 1 mass, 1 oratorio, 4 choral/orchestra works for National expositions, 9 ceremonial/other occasion works, 4 cantatas
