Q: Will school resume as normal in the fall?
A: The district is in constant communication with local and state health and education officials to make the best decisions possible for our students returning to school in the fall. Please make sure you like and follow Mesquite ISD social media, check the district website for updates, and update your phone number in Skyward on your student registration so you have instant information as soon as the district makes it available. Woolley Middle School is opening as planned in August, and we are planning for all possible scenarios, including a normal school day schedule.
Q: Can hoodies be worn at Woolley?
A: Per MISD standard dress requirements, hoodies that meet acceptable outerwear guidelines will be allowed. However, hoods cannot be worn on students' heads inside the building.
Q: Will cell phones be allowed at Woolley?
A: To keep our focus on instruction, we will have a campus-wide cellphone policy enforced in every classroom that both accommodates parent's and guardian's need to reach their children in cases of emergency and also prioritizes instruction. This policy will be communicated to you and your students in August. Earbuds and headphones will not be allowed in the classroom or hallways.
Q: Will there be student lockers at Woolley?
A: No, there will not be student lockers at Woolley except for athletic lockers that will be assigned on an individual basis.
Q: Woolley seems to be very large compared to my child's elementary school. How will my student avoid getting lost?
A: While our new building may seem large, it will be divided into grade levels a much as possible. Each grade level will have their own hallway to decrease the time and distance students have to travel. When students travel to classes such as fine arts and athletics in a different wing of the building, our staff will make sure they have plenty of practice getting to class the first few weeks of school. To help ease the transition to middle school, 6th graders will transition to new classrooms fewer times a day than 7th and 8th graders. Additionally, we will open the building for parents to come walk their schedules with students in August before school starts. Please have intentional conversations with your student about the importance of taking care of business, appropriate hallway behavior, and getting to class on time. During every passing period, staff will be available for help and supervision.
Q: What electives are available to my student?
A: For more information about electives available to middle school students, please click here.
Q: How many classes will my student have in middle school?
A: As we plan and prepare for opening school in August, we and the district will communicate with families and students if daily schedule changes outside the norm will occur due to safety concerns about COVID-19. If we resume a normal school schedule in August, our 7th & 8th grade students will have seven traditional class periods and one shorter advisory period during the day that will focus on life skills and social-emotional learning. Most 6th graders will have three longer class periods and two shorter ones each day to ease their transition to middle school and reduce the number of times they have to travel during the day.
Q: How can I help my child stay organized?
A: As we wait for information and prepare for the best possible learning scenario for the fall, whether it is school as usual, or a blend of face-to-face and distance learning, it is imperative that parents and school staff partner together to help students learn to manage and take responsibility for their learning. The best thing parents can do is keep an open line of communication with each of your child's teachers. Check grades on Skyward often, and encourage your child to communicate with you what the expectations were of them that day in class. Helping your child prioritize their time and setting up a system to keep work organized is important. Encourage your student to check his/her own grades in Skyward weekly and plan tutoring times with teachers in classes where they may need extra help. Middle school is great time to start helping students own their learning.
Q: Will there be opportunities for parent involvement at Woolley?
A: Yes! If you are interested in serving on our Site Based Committee or on our campus PTA, we would love to have your involvement. There will be many volunteer opportunities throughout the year! Stay tuned!
