What is Speech-Language Therapy?
Speech-Langauage Pathologists (SLPs) provide a wide variety of services to school-age children. We screen/observe, assess, and remediate delays and disorders related to speech articulation, language, and fluency through direct therapy sessions.
Articulation is the correct production of speech sounds. It is a concern when the errors are inappropriate for his or her cultural and social background or overall developmental level.
Parental suggestions: avoid "baby talk", model good speech, read with your child.
Language is the ability to understand and use oral messages to clearly communicate ideas, wants, and needs. Some examples of language concerns include: when children cannot express ideas clearly, cannot maintain a topic of conversation, have difficulty recalling familiar vocabulary words, struggle to answer simple Wh- questions.
Parental suggestions: read and discuss stories and vocabulary terms often, talk about the steps to complete a task, ask your child questions and have conversations regularly about the world around you.
Fluency refers to the rate and pattern of speech. Concerns may rise when a child exhibits consistent red flags over a period of time and it is accompanied by frustration and movements. Examples of thesse red flags may include: prolongations (e.g. my ssssscissors), part word repetitions (e.g. my sci- sci- sci- scissors), whole word repetitions (e.g. my- my- my- scissors), or phrase repetitions (e.g. my scissors- my scissors- my scissors are lost).
Parental suggestions: don't interrupt/rush while he/she is speaking, model smooth, easy speech.
Please contact Mrs. Chlebus or myself if you have questions or concerns regarding your child's speech and language development. We are here to help!
