The goal of a current events course is for the student to think about and discuss the major issues of the day and to have an in depth understanding and appreciation of current events. The focus of the class will be issues that affect the student as a resident of the United States. Each week, the class will examine a current issue and explore the social, political, and economic issues associated with that issue. The objectives of this course are to make the connection between current events and history, to enhance the student’s understanding of issues in the United States, to encourage students to be informed citizens, and to help them to make informed decisions. Through readings, videos, and discussions, students will learn how to craft well-reasoned opinions grounded by factual information. This course will prepare students to better understand and participate in the democratic society in which they live.
